I ♥ Garage Sales!

Pin It Now!

After seeing some of the things other bloggers have found at Garage/Yard Sales, I decided to give it another chance. I've had some bad experiences in the past. It seems that I only found garage sales with trash, things that I would have thrown out. You know, dirty pots and pans that have been burned so badly that they are unusable, damaged tupperware, mismatched cheap glassware, dirty toys, etc. I went out first thing Saturday morning and headed towards the town of Los Gatos (location, location, location) because you have to go where the money is. I found only one garage sale there, probably because a storm was coming in later that day. I bought a necklace for $2. I only brought $10 with me to start. I drove around and couldn't find any more yard sales in that town so I headed for the Willow Glen area of San Jose. As I was headed that direction I saw a yard sale on a busy street. I spotted this glass terrarium as I was sitting at the stoplight. Remember I only have $8 left. I figured since it was now 10:00 am and this was still here that it was probably a lot of money. I asked the man how much and he said to make him an offer. I hate that. I told him to tell me how much he wanted. He said $5.00...I said "Sold"! I love it. I bought some maiden hair ferns for in it (I still need to get some little terra cotta pots for them so ignore the green plastic ones.) I'm thinking about painting it white. What do you think? I found some magazine clippings of painted ones which are shown below. I think the color it is now, rust (real rust not faux) is too dark for my home. Should I paint it white?

I love that terrarium! I never have much luck at garage sales either ... like you said, it's usually junk that should have been thrown away. I think you should paint it white. ♥

Wow! You did so good! I would have chosen that, too. What a wonderful find. I am the same way about garage sales; it really is all about location.

You could either paint it white, or a muted green. Whatever you decide to do with it, it's lovely! Good for you!

Yeah, I hate it when people say "make me an offer' cause it's usually never in the ballpark I'm thinking of! You lucked out...that's a beautiful terarium! I think white would be pretty with the romantic style of your home.

Hi Cindy: I have been a lurker, but have decided to "come out" as I enjoy your blog so much. I so get it! So, greetings from North Idaho! I am orginally from Half Moon Bay, by the way. Anyhoo, love the terrarium, great deal. Yeah, definately paint it! I think a soft pastel (yellow, blue, wedgewood green, etc.) would be awesome! Or maybe white underneath, shabbied and then a wash of pastel over the top of that? Must show pics when you are done. Thanks for letting me escape from my administrative duties!

Oh Cindy! What a sweet find and just so stunning in your home.
I like the rust in some homes but in yours I see it white or with a touch of blue or yellow...maybe muted green? I think Andrea also mentioned the green. We will lok forward to seeing pictures...I never have such luck but maybe I need to begin trying again! : )
Have a sweet day!
Hugs,
Sue

Wow, Cindy, that is a beauty! I would paint it white, too.

I rarely find much at yard sales. It is all about location, for sure!

Sounds like you had great luck, Saturday!

Cindy, I'm so glad you decided to give yardsales another try & get out there! I just love your new terrarium...and think it would probably look more at home at your place in white. What a great find! I would have had to buy that too...and lucky you that it was still there at 10:00. That's one of the secrets to successful yardsaling for me...getting there early! I know for a fact that CA has some great yardsales, cause a couple of my other online friends have found some wonderful, wonderful things out there, so keep on trying. Get the paper out & scope out your route the night before by reading all the yardsales listed in your area. That's how I'm usually so successful. Good for you!

White, definitely white. What a find. I never find anything good, either. Just old plastic toys and junk. Maybe I need to give it another shot, too.

Cindy- Don't take this personally, but you absolutely make me sick. Really. I'm gonna cry. I'm hittin the garage sales this weekend. There will be no stopping me. I adore the finish as it but if you have to paint it, how about a pale grey/blue? That's just my favorite color right now so I want everyone to paint every thing that color! Enjoy your new treasure. Brat.

What a deal! I've gone to alot of "dirty" sales too but once you find that one steal it makes it all worth it. I like the color it is now but if it doesn't work for your decor, then maybe you should paint it.

What a lucky find!
I never find anything great at garage sales. I think it would look really good in the white. You might want to try letting some ofthe rust show through.

I can't believe you paid $5 for that! Good find. I've been a lurker for a while here and love your decor. I think you should paint it a softer color but maybe not white.

Oh my gosh, I love that terrarium!!! If you check out my new blog, you will see my garage sale find from last Saturday. It is a terrarium of a smaller scale. I put moss and a birdnest inside. I had to paint and distress it of course.

You scored!!!
I love it the color it is now, but if you think it won't be too big of a pain to paint (does the glass come out?) then paint it the way you feel like you will enjoy it most. What a great find! Looks like Willow glen is THE place to go saling.

I love your 'new' terrarium and definitely paint it white! I also like the top that looks like a crown to me!
One other thing I see that I love is your birdhouse table. Custom or a find?? So gorgeous!!

What a great find! I think it would be lovely white. YEah, you just never know with garage sales. I call the not-so-good yard sales "duds", hehe.
