Avocado and citrus season in California - Show and Tell Friday

Pin It Now!

Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!  One of the benefits of winter in California is it's avocado and citrus time! I see lemons and oranges in everyone's yards this time of the year!

These are the last of the lemons from my garden before I move. It's sad to see the little lemons forming and I won't be here to see them ripen!  I'm just hoping whoever moves in my place next appreciates my roses, hydrangeas and lemons!

The avocados came from a friend. He has the biggest avocado tree I've ever seen!  There are hundreds of avocados on there right now!  I can't wait to make some guacamole with these!  So, I'm really curious...I've heard avocados are a California thing...how many of you have had avocados before and are they available where you live? I like avocados but my daughter LOVES them!

The new home search is in full swing...I've been busy looking at different apartment complexes around here. I live in a small four-plex now but I've decided my next place will be in a bigger complex that has a pool, Jacuzzi and gym.  There are a lot of them around here but I think I've found the one I like the most. Well...I should say the one that I can afford that I like the most. The ones I really like are out of my price range!  I've learned a lot in the last couple weeks...the rent prices on these places changes daily!  It's so tricky...they've been going down the last couple days and I'm wondering if I should go for it now or wait a little longer and hope the rent drops more. It's sort of like playing the stock market!  It's very stressing!  I have two more months before I have to move so I will probably wait a little longer and hope the prices continue to drop!  I'm just glad I didn't rent this place I'm looking at when I first saw it because it's down about $70 a month now! I would have been locked in with a 1 year lease at the higher price!

Oh, Cindy, I LOVE avocados! I don't make guacamole, but I do slice them and put them in salads or on sandwiches! I doubt I'd have much luck getting an avocado tree to grow here in Massachusetts! Enjoy your lemons and avocados - they look yummy!

Howdy Cindy! Good luck on the search. I wonder if prices went down for the holidays? You could check with a realtor in your area too, they might have insight. Have an awesome week and ty for hosting!!

Aren't avocados available everywhere? A pity if they are not. In Seattle every place that sells produce has them, but there's nothing like getting them from a neighbor's tree like when I was in Florida. In N. California we grew citrus, but not avocados. I loved picking our own fruit!

Hi Cindy!!!!

I love lemons!!! To me everything taste better with the tangy taste of lemons. My dad's cousin in Van Nuys has the largest lemons I've ever seen and his yard has quite a lot of them.

All the best in 2014 Cindy!!!

Sandy,I love lemons and avocados. We eat lots of them. The best way we like them is on thick toast made with home made wholemeal bread. I slice them over the toast, sprinkle them with a little lemon juice. Slice some corn off a cooked cob, then crumble over some fetta cheese. Lovely.
Good luck with the hunt. :)

We don't grow avocados in South Carolina, so I never learned to appreciate the taste. Our neighbors grow a wonderful lemon called Myers Lemon. It was cold last night so they draped the tree with lights and a heavy sheet to protect it. Looking forward to lots of iced tea with lemon and lemon pie. I love to put the lemon rind in the garbage disposal and have my kitchen smell nice and clean.

Happy 2014! I am still worried about you finding a great place to move that's in your price range. I have thought and thought about you having to move after being there so many years, and my heart just breaks for you. BUT.... I know where ever you do move, that your place will be just darling when you're through with it. Keep us updated on the move plans.... HUGS! :)

Cindy: Best of luck on your upcoming move! We love avocados, and they are pretty much available year round, now in Ohio. However, I will have to say that when we are in California or anywhere near that Golden State, we agree the avocados are more tasty!

I want to add that whoever inherits your beautiful flowers and citrus trees is very lucky! Hope they appreciate the time and love you've put into the garden.

Hi Cindy, I certainly DO HOPE that whoever moves in enjoys the lemons, hydrangeas and roses! omg, I would think I'd died and gone to heaven, what a legacy of beauty and abundance to leave to someone else. I live next to an avocado tree and mango and I love eating them when they're in season. Its the most fun to pick them off the tree and have a meal! I use both mango and avocado in green smoothies. Your posts are always lovely and inspirational. Thanks for hosting! blessings, lady

Thanks for your thoughts today, Cindy. Will be praying that you land exactly where you should at the best rent available. I hope you're blessed in 2014 and beyond. One bit of shared information regarding avocados...I have a dwarf tree we planted at least 12 years ago. It bore fruit after several years in the ground, then mysteriously stopped. It would get blooms and then they would fall off in the Fall. I heard several things, like bees are needed to make it bear and we didn't see bees. Then we saw bees, but still no fruit. I finally asked a gardner (now our gardner!) what might be the problem. He said, "Stop watering it." Sure enough, we didn't water it (except for limited rain) for a year and voila, bumper crop! Evidently, the roots of the avocado like to be a bit starved. Who knew? I live in So CA with our tree. More trees to come in 2014. We're planting 4-5 in our front yard of various citrus. If anyone has a favorite, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Happy 2014!!

I LOVE avocado's! FL does have Haas avocado's but they also have another breed, cheaper and a different taste...more watery but still
delicious:)

I can't wait for you to find your new nest! I know you'll make it gorgeous and comfy:)

Cindy, If you planted the hydrangeas and roses, you may want to dig them up and take them with you! You can thin the hydrangea and cut it back and put it in a pot. We dug up roses that were my mother-in-law's and transplanted them several times. Your plants were costly and perhaps you can keep some of them. I have even dug up plants and put them in large garbage bags until I could find a place for them. Just a thought.
