The Marilyn clutch - Show and Tell Friday

Pin It Now!

Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!  My dad just sent me this little silk bag that belonged to mom. He said he knew she would want me to have it.  There is an interesting little story around this bag.

My mom and grandmother used to love going to thrift stores...way before doing so was so popular!  They were at a thrift store in San Francisco and my mom bought this bag.  Now I wish I would have paid more attention to every little detail my mom told me about this purse but I unfortunately didn't.  The way I remember it is the woman at the thrift store told my mom that Marilyn Monroe, who was living in San Francisco around this time, had donated some items.  My dad doesn't remember her saying that.  Whatever the story was my mom believed this once belonged to Marilyn.

It's a darling little bag and has a coin purse attached with a gold chain that fits inside the bag.  Below you can see why my mom believes this was Marilyn's purse...

When you open it up it has her initials "MM" are stamped in gold on the inside!  This was from around the time that Marilyn was divorced from Joe DiMaggio but had come back to San Francisco and rumors were flying that they were back together. We will probably never know if it was hers but I'm happy to have it because it meant so much to my mom!

I'm also very happy to have it because I'm a little obsessed with all things "Marilyn" right now because almost every time I go out some guy will come up to me and tell me I remind him of Marilyn! What a compliment! It must be the blond hair and that I'm dressing more elegantly than I ever have.  My girlfriends think it's hilarious that it happens so often!  I even have an upcoming date (did I mention I'm single again?) with a guy that walked into a place I was at and pulled me towards him and said "Marilyn...you have to be Marilyn Monroe" in his sexy Italian accent!  Yep...that line worked on me and I'm looking forward to my date on Friday night!

I can hardly wait until Halloween to be Marilyn!  I must run now so I can watch some Marilyn Monroe movies and get her mannerisms down so I can be the best Halloween Marilyn I can be!

I am choosing to believe your Mom's red purse once belonged to Marilyn. However, even if that story is just fantasy, it is one darling purse and you are so lucky to have it. Congrats on your weight loss because you look really great! I hope this new guy is a keeper and the man of your dreams. Thanks for hosting Cindy!

I think your bag is a Morris Moskowitz bag (MM). It appears that is his logo.

What a delightful post and bag, I would love to think that the bag belonged to Marilyn, it sure looks her style.

I have also posted about discoveries of my mums as I am slowly going through her belongings after she passed away. I have found some wonderful items including an alligator skin bag and lots of gorgeous oroton handbags.

Love this post, love the bag :)

What a lovely bag. I'm sure you're glad to have it. I find it funny how most men will say anything to get a woman to go out with them, because you don't look anything like Marilyn Monroe. I always thought you looked more like Glenn Close. But have fun being Marilyn on Halloween. Pretending is what Halloween is all about!

I can imagine you might reflect on your weight loss/make-over journey and wonder...like, it might not have entered your mind five or six years ago that, in your early fifties, you'd be compared to Marilyn Monroe (a compliment at any age or time!).

I think I would have liked her as a person. I've read about her. I think she tried very hard to seek a life of substance but she just had some real misfires. She liked to cook and was very serious about her cooking!

When she died, my mom cried all day, and she wasn't prone to crying. Maybe it spoke of vulnerability for more than one woman, who knows. I was young, but I remember when Marilyn's death hit the newswires and it was all over the TV.

I grew up watching Marilyn movies on TV with Mom, such as "Bus Stop" and "The Seven-Year Itch" (which is where the scene is, I think, featuring your Halloween costume, the iconic white dress). It's been widely said that Marilyn Monroe did it so effortlessly, she wasn't given proper credit for being a really great actress.

This is a fun story about your clutch. It's not only beautiful and in fine shape, but I think you've got the authentic piece. Your mom, like you, had the artistic/savvy eye. Thanks for sharing the details and, can I just say, we have come to adore your dad!

(I wondered if you were single again. Lots of gal-pal getaways and less weekend biking. Life...so it goes. I wouldn't worry about being a wallflower, Cindy. You're 'way too va-va-voom! Life is ripe with opportunities.)

I've neglected to say, too, that I think it's great you landed such a good job, actually very fast and, of all places, HP. I've got an old friend in another state who had not only worked over many years for HP herself, but they also had employed her former and now current husband, actually taking them to Europe locations twice; what a dream, to work and live in a foreign country for awhile! You must have some very good skills and experience to get on there. I read where some companies are hesitant to hire the "older" workers (you're not "old," but you know what I mean; we're no longer 20-somethings), yet my sister-in-law is in her early 60s and, after getting edged out one place where she'd been over 20 years, has recently scored a great job in her field, so obviously the smarter companies know not to turn away the seasoned and reliable employee.

Maybe it IS a Morris Moskowitz bag (MM logo), and Marilyn fell in love with it because she shared the same initials!!

Wow, how amazing if that is Marilyn's purse! It definitely looks like something she'd own. If you haven't watched "Niagara" yet I highly recommend it, it's one of my favorite Marilyn movies along with "Bus Stop". You're going to make a beautiful Marilyn Cindy!!!

Cindy how sweet of your dad to send you that MM purse. It probably is Morris's but I like to believe the same thing your mom did. Sounds like a interesting story and besides it's red, the best color ever.
