Pink Saturday!

Pin It Now!

First off...I must say that I don't think that dying animals pink or any other color is a good idea, in fact I think it's illegal in some states but I couldn't help but video tape this little poodle when I saw her outside of a thrift store on my lunch hour last week. You just don't see a pink poodle every day! I know it so wrong but you have to admit she's so cute! She looked like a stuffed animal! The owner told me that they were going to have to sell her because they lost their jobs...how sad! Hopefully her next mama won't dye her pink!

Happy Pink Saturday! Please stop by Beverly ~ How Sweet the Sound to see more bloggers participating in Pink Saturday!

EDITED TO ADD: It was not my intent to sadden or even make people angry with this post!! I'm so sorry if I have! My belief is that you should never judge a person's motives without knowing all the facts! I got my dog Beau at about the same age as this dog because his owner couldn't keep him. Maybe these people are moving into a homeless shelter because they have children...we just don't know! Please don't judge people without knowing the whole story! I find that very sad! My heart goes out to EVERYONE that has lost their job in these hard economic times!

Poor poodle, not only is she dyed pink but may have to be rehomed due to job loss, so sad. I'm so glad I found you again as I confess I used one of your ideas, turning the wardrobe into a window, I put up a pretty curtain over the mirrored wardrobe. So pleased with the effect, Thank You.

It is so sad, that people must give their beloved household pets away because they have lost their job. I feel for the owners and for the pets. I have two cute little yorkshire terriers and would never be able to part of them because they are like my children. It must be very hard for the owners.
I know that much of the pets are ending in shelters and this makes me very sad.

I know times are tough ,but how much does a small dog eat. You can trim them with a cheap set of clippers, if you can't afford a groomer. They give so much love just when you need it. I just hope the dog gets a home that will love it just for being a dog, instead of a sho piece. Kathy

I'm with artis1111, what the heck getting rid of a dog.., because they lost there jobs. I don't think its sad, its disgusting. Sad for the dog that's for sure, but not the owners. Those people are not meant to have a dog in the first place. My husband lost his job, and we were just getting by just barely with 11 birds, and they require a lot of expense if you care about them. It just goes to show you really where there at with that dog, beside dying it and showing it off. It's almost like the line 'Oh I'm moving so I have to get rid of my animal'... oh really! I think I just about had it with people and there excuses! Sorry Cindy, but this really hit a nerve with me.

I am in total agreement with artis1111 and Romantic Inspirations Sandy, this is terrible! It makes me cry for that precious little puppy, I could care less about the people who did this to her or even that they lost their job... I will just pray that the little pup finds a wonderful, new loving home... I would have dognapped her if I had seen that! I would go without food, water, clothes, you name it to keep my animals...did they give their kids away too????? Julie Marie PS You can see how fired up this makes me!!!

Surely this will be a great loss to these owners. Some shelters give away food. Of course, I don't think they'll spring for the dye job:) I would share my last french fry with my Jessie to keep from giving her up.....no, I'd give it to her :) Cute post, but a sad commentary on the times.

Anonymous said...

Oh, what a cutie! I could just hug her! Well, I'm assuming it's a her! Hopefully her owners won't have to give her up after all. Maybe they have to move to a place that won't accept pets. It would be hard enough to loose your job but then your pet, too? :(

Cindy said...

I agree with all of you. I would never get rid of my dog! He's just like one of my kids!

One thing I've learned though is not to judge other people's motives when I don't know all the facts. Who knows...maybe they have to move into a homeless shelter and can't take the dog. There could be more to the story...

My intent was not to make people sad with this....I feel so bad now!

I also have to say that I got my dog Beau because his owners didn't keep him!!! I think he probably has a better with me and I'm hoping for the same with that dog. It could be a good thing!

Don't feel bad, Cindy, for posting the pink poodle. First of all, I love, love my animals and I would try EVERYTHING before getting rid of them. HOWEVER, like you said, we do not know the circumstances. And for the lady that posted that she would go without food just to keep her dog ... well, hopefully you will never find out if you really would in fact go without food. Plus, dying the poodle is pretty goofy but I'm sure it didn't hurt it. Heck, don't most of us dye our hair? It doesn't hurt me. And let's face it ... animals ARE expensive ... food, litter, shots, licensing, etc.

OMG..one little poodle? Good grief if the human can eat, the dog can eat...eat healthy and your dog can eat what you eat. As for pink...nothing wrong with dying them, it isn't a harsh chemical process..some kool-aid powder(no sugar of course)or special dog coat dye and your good. Probably less uncomfortable or different than dressing them in the assorted clothing, shoes, accessories. Cute.

Julie Marie said...

Dear Cindy, I do not want you to think I am blasting YOU, I am just such an animal lover this really upset me today... and to Mary who signed as anonymous... I already know what it is like to not eat but made sure my animals did... at one point in my life I had no job, no husband, no bed, nothing! But three precious little dogs who I found ways to earn enough money to take care of and keep them... they were the ONLY thing that got me through the hardships I endured in my ealier years... I am not running for Queen for a Day, I just would FIND a way to keep that little dog no matter what... Julie Marie PS Cindy, I published your frank comment on my post and I do appreciate you putting mine on as well... I guess this is just a very close to home subject for many of us... I don't really no what all the fuss is about, NOBODY is judging anybody. Ok, I'm just telling my opinion on this because I know from experience what people are capable of doing when it come to animals. Truth is what it is! Cindy don't feet bad, this was not a target for you to even get upset about. Look somethings need to be express with things like this because it's happening to much from all over the place. I have put myself in so many situations to protect whatever animal it may be, and I know your precious dog is loved by you without a doubt. Come on, sure there may be some instances where things may not turn out for some people having to get rid of there animals. In general this is a PROBLEM, a SERIOUS ONE AT THAT. My God we have people dropping off cats because they just don't want them anymore. Who gets hurt in the process? ... The Animal! This was not intended to get everybody in an uproar over.... just stated some facts!! You have to admit it does say something about her showing off her dog like that, and why would you want to defend something like that in the first place. Hummm

I'm so glad you made this post and that is one sweet little dog. I work with a feline rescue group and like most other shelters and rescues we are not only finding it harder to place kitties but we just don't have enough foster homes to take more in. More and more we are seeing people that are becoming homeless and with that I mean there isn't even room in the shelters for families and children. It's truely a a sad time. I'm sure this pretty baby will find a good home. Let's all be grateful that we have our families including our furry family members sheltered and safe and say a prayer for those that have no place to go.

Bless their hearts....So she spent a couple of dollars on veggie dye and made her doggie pink. She had it there in town with her and obviously cares for her a lot! I have learned not to judge folks. It doesn't help them or me! None of us knows what we may someday be forced to do or accept. We should offer prayers and support. It would be kind if someone could offer to be a foster parent to the poodle till the family was able to care for it. I am trying to teach my kids to face each situation by not jumping to conclusions....think about how you can make a difference for good.
Mean people suck but even they have a story!!
Poor Cindy....you had no idea you were going to host such a passionate forum today. I think it is good to stir things up sometimes when we can all learn and grow from it!

Cindy, I'm so happy you are participating with us today. I wish you a Happy Pink Saturday.

I remember when I was a little girl, and you could buy little chicks and baby ducks which had been dyed. Times do change, don't they?

Clearly, this owner loves their baby. And, I believe one should not judge another because we don't walk in their shoes.

Taking good care of a pet is more than feeding it. I hope things work out for these people. I'm sure they will find someone to love their little dog.

Good Gracious, they had dyed baby chickens for years to make
them noticable and cuter so they
could sell them at Easter. The lady may have used her last dime to dye the puppy so she would be noticed with hopes of finding her a safe home. The lady may need to
sell her so that she can keep a
roof over her head, who knows as
long as the puppy gets a good home.
They used to dye dogs in the 50's.
It was fashionable!:o)

We went through very hard times and always kept our two cats (having just had to put the last kitty to sleep do to old age).

However, I know a lot of people don't realize you don't have to spend a lot of money on pets because they've been drawn in by what the media suggests.

Also, it can be very difficult to find a place to rent if they move and have a pet (although some will accept a cat more easily than a dog).

Having gone through two huge job loss years, when we had no income, I know we would never give up our pets but I DO understand how someone can be so broke that a bag of kibble may mean not buying bread and milk.

I remember when I was a kid (50's and 60s), dying the fur of poodles was done a great deal. I prefer the natural look. :)

If they are going into a homeless shelter, I would HOPE that they have a friend or relative that knows the dog and would adopt it and possibly reunite when they get back on their feet. That way it would still be with someone that they know and it might not be as traumatic for the dog. Hopefully it will all work out for the good.

Wow, this post elicited some impassioned comments! Unfortunately I had to recently give away my sweet cat because she was urinating on just about everything. My older cat would not accept her in our home, even after a year, and she was stressed and spraying everywhere. It was the hardest thing I think I ever had to do, and I miss her everyday, but I found a friend to take her and she keeps me posted and says she is doing great and her other cat loves her and they play together. It breaks my heart that I had to give her up, but I couldn't let her ruin all my furniture and house and she seems to be doing great in her knew home. I do miss her terribly and have days where I want to go right over there and take her back:( My point is, you just never know what the situation is.

Mary said...

Cindy,

You are definitely correct. We should never judge until we have walked a mile in other people's shoes.

I have owned several dogs over the years. At one time I had an American Eskimo and a wolf/shepherd cross. I loved them both and cried so when I was in an accident, lost my job, my home and my health. We could not find a landlord who would accept the wolf/shepherd. I cried so when I had to give her up. However, the people who adopted her had a farm. I kept in touch until she passed away at a ripe old age. She was so happy on the farm, I couldn't have asked for anything better for her. She ran free and enjoyed the last 10 years of her life roaming the farm.

Cindy, I'm sorry if people are giving you a hard time for posting about the little poodle. Fact is we got our dog because he bit someone and was going to be put to sleep otherwise (he didn't even break the skin and had all his shots). We had known the dog for 4 yrs and knew that he was not a bitter, if he bit someone he had darn good reason. So we took him and we both are so glad that god brought him to us. Things have happened in my life recently and I would be lost without my dog to care for and who cares for me. Maybe this little pink poodle needs to go to a new home not only because of her current owners joblessness but maybe because her next owners truly need her more.

I'm sorry for writing a book but I wanted to maybe make you feel a bit better. You're right, people shouldn't judge others (human or animal) until they know the whole story.

Pamela said...

PS: I think the pink is cute. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with it. As long as the owner is thoughtful enough to make certian there are no harmful side effects to the animal then I think it's simply a matter of choice just like nail polish and hair bows.

Personally I get more upset of tail and ear docking or the the way that pull the hair from the ears of some long haired breeds when grooming.

Again, I aplogize for the book but I'm opinionated :o)

Joanne Kennedy said...

I saw a pink dog once and thought it was cute. I asked the lady what she used and she said just Cool aid and it washes out after awhile. I don't think I would ever do that to my dogs but thought it was cute. I'm a BIG animal lover and see nothing wrong with it.

I do agree that many people treat their dogs and cats as only "pets" and give them away to quickly. However, like you said Cindi, many people got their loved fur babies by someone having to give it up for one reason or another.

I hope and pray that I'm never forced to give my boys up. But if it was for their own good I would like to think I could do that.

I did have a dog that I adopted. She was sick when I got her and not expected to live but a few months. I took her to my vet and she lived a happy life for about 1 1/2 years. She would often pee in my house but I still didn't give her away. She ruined my new couch, rug and bed but I didn't care. She was my baby and I was going to provide her with the best home I could for the little time she had left to live. I have never regretted that.

So unless I could not provide a good home for my pets they would never be given up.

To me our pets are like our children but I also know that not everyone thinks that way. It's sad but true.

Hugs,
Joanne

Has anyone checked craigslist lately? It is absolutely FILLED with pets that are to be given away because of people having to relocate to find a job, etc. What really bothers me about this is that these poor animals could end up for pitbull practice. People need to be responsible and discriminating when finding a home for their pets, and not just trust the first person who answers a free ad.

Generally when white dogs are dyed the groomer will use a vegetable based product that is harmless and could literally be eaten by dogs or humans!

Yes, shelters are getting very full due to the economy. A sad sign of our times.

Oh Cindy,
I hate when innocent posts create little (or sometimes big) dramas. I know your heart was true when you posted this, don't feel bad. There have, and will always be dogs given up in shelters. Just as there will always be children given up in orphanages. It's a human flaw that some people are just not responsible, and that flaw really has nothing to do with your post. I thought this dog was adorable, I'm sure it will not be easy for the owner to let her go, and have no doubt that if she is given up, she will be adopted quickly. Enjoy your weekend Cindy, your posts are ALWAYS enjoyable!

I remember years ago, when I was in college, I went to the Jacob Javits Center in NYC for some kind of fashion event. I saw Andy Warhol there. I remember feeling sorry for that poor dog but I'm sure that dog was living in the lap of luxury!! :)

I think you have a very generous spirit Cindy & I'm going to follow your example & not judge, lest I be judged. ;o) Not gonna judge your post, the pink poodle, the comments left, the owners reasoning for giving her away...nothing! I will howver share a funny story about some dyed chicks my mom bought us for Easter one year.

We were a family of 5 (4 kids & Mom) living in an apartment...it was right after my parents' divorce & to cheer us up, she gifted us each w/ a pastel colored chick, thinking the effects of the dye would ensure that they didn't live too long. Well that dye isn't as harmful as people think ;o) & every single one of those chicks lived & grew & grew & grew. One turned out to be a rooster & when he started crowing, the neighbors started complaining & that was the end of those hens & rooster. We had to give them away to a farm.

Bless my mother's heart...she meant well! LOL

Happy Pink Saturday! We fostered "Taco" for 9 months because a family of 5 lost their home and had to live in a 1 room hotel room until they could afford an apartment. The apartment was part of welfare - but no dogs allowed. I've learned not to judge after this experience because I initially thought - how can someone give up their dog??? I have 2 rescue dogs and 3 cats. Taco was a birthday gifts to their little girl. My husband worked with the father. In 9 months we fell in love - he was ours. Then they got back on their feet and found an apartment with a yard!! The day they came to pick him up I cried and cried. But when that little girl lept out of the car and Taco busted out the front door never looking back -all the hurt and disappointment went away. She said "thank you Miss Jennifer for for taking care of my dog, I cried every night he was away". We have no clue what this economy is doing to people - we need to help, be compassionate and not judge. Pink, purple or green :)

I have poodles, and if I had room I'd take it pink or not pink. What ever the circumstance is, I do hope they are able to resolve something. Even homeless people have dogs with out jobs.

If one thing you brought awareness to another situation of the result of what's happening in the world. I've transported so many dogs lately that have had the same circumstance happen to them. They are given away because they can't afford to feed them. Dogs can live on people food and won't die if they do.

If people are getting upset about it, perhaps they need to wear someone shoes that are in the situation.

Ok, I am off my soap box.

Poor Cindy, you got an earful over this. Some times we strike a nerve, huh?

You are right, who knows the whole story? Also, I've heard that vegetable dyes or Koolaide can dye a dog safely and is no more harm to them than shampoo. I don't even know what my own natural hair color is after dying it so many years, and I am sure with much stronger chemicals than what groomers use on dogs! I certainly won't judge those people for dying their dog.

I hope you haven't let everyone upset you. You know we love you and would hate to see you sad. Take care!

That was a lovely post, Cindy. People who get their undies in a bunch because someone else who's having a hard time is finding a new home for their pet have obviously never been through too many difficulties! They usually say they treat their pets just like their own children... I wonder if the children would agree they're treated as well as their parents' pets? (I've seen many parents who treat the pets MUCH better!) I'm also left to wonder if many of those who are harshly judging these pet owners are as outraged when a child is deserted? Don't change your editorial content because of the loons out there, there is no shortage of them!
