Lauren and I finished up our Intermediate Cake Decorating class last night. We had taken the beginning class last year. Below is my cake, which I'm very disappointed, didn't turn out as well as I pictured it in my mind. I'll just have to practice some more.
I just LOVE Lauren's cake below. She's obviously better at cake decorating than her mom! I was so proud of her. I think this is just amazing for a 16 year old! Aren't the little snails on the grass so adorable. She made those with fondant.
Below are the cakes from the rest of our class. I was really impressed!
This one below was made by a teenage boy...
It was a lot of fun. I'm not sure if we will go on to take the advanced class or not. You have to make a wedding cake on the final night and that scares me!!!

Updated to answer questions: No, it wasn't a Wilton class and it we didn't take it at Michaels. We took our classes at Cakeworks on Bascom Ave. in Campbell, California.

Cindy, they are adorable! Maybe my daughter Shannon can hire her to make my new Grandbaby's first birthday cake on Oct.4th I will be out there to celebrate his 1st birthday too!
Take care and have a great day!

I think you and Lauren did an amazing job on your cakes. They are beautiful. They also look delicious. Wish I could have a slice.
Oh Cindy! Both of your cakes came out WONDERFUL! You should both be super proud.
Are these Wilton classes you are taking? I love how you got to do different type of cakes then the ones from the other Wilton Classes I've seen.
You MUST take the next class. You will find that a wedding cake is much easier then you think. Besides, you don't have to do it as a wedding cake it can be a tiered birthday cake.
I have a tip on how to get your cake icing super smooth if you like I can send it to you. It's not really my idea but I use it. I learned about it from someone out in the Internet world. LOL
Email me if you want me to send it to you. You will need to take a trip to Home Depo or a place like it to get what you need. Does that have you wondering what in the world does Home Depo have to do with cake decorating? LOL
Hugs,
Joanne
Oh my gosh - those came out BEAUTIFUL!! I can't even imagine how yours could have looked better, and yes, I think Lauren is a natural! Love her little snails!!!
I can't even imagine taking a cake decorating class while on Weight Watchers (I'm not strong in the will power department!!) You are truly amazing!!
Donna @ An Enchanted Cottage
I think your cake is just lovely! I took a cake decorating class once and my cake didn't even come close to yours. You should be very proud!
Yummy...those are the prettiest cakes ever. You are a talented bunch thats for sure!
What are you talking about, your cake is beautiful. I've always wanted to take a cake decorating class. You've inspired me.
I've always wanted to take a class like that. I think the cakes turned out really nice.
Hi Cindy,
I think both of your cakes turned out just beautiful (and everyone else's too). Making a wedding cake sounds like a lot of fun and much work. Love the cakes shown here and so glad I can't get my hands on them since I'm trying to get ready for Spring weather and clothes - yikes!
Happy weekend ~Tracie
They all look great. I want to take a cake decorating class someday.
Very pretty! You, Lauren, and the rest of the class did a wonderful job ~ thanks for sharing! I love the snails! It must've been a lot of work to get the lacy blue details on the sides of your cake. Too pretty to cut into, that's for sure ~ but then that's what pictures are for, right? Enjoy your delicious creations:)
Karin
Actually, Cindy, I loved both yours and your daughters cakes. I think they were so pretty!
What do you mean your cake didn't turn out well. It looks great, but I know what you mean when you envision something. That's something I have wanted to do.
Ciao
Cindy -- both cakes, yours and Lauren's, are exquisite. Honestly, they are the prettiest of all you showed.
You may see things that you wish had turned out differently on your cake, and for this reason are disappointed, but for the rest of us, we'd be thrilled to have produced so lovely a cake.
Joanie
Cindy beautiful work. I think you both did a great job. Another wonderful skill to add to your arsenal of talent. The next party will be stunning.
Debra
Wow Cindy, I think your cake looks fantastic! Very dainty and elegant. Lauren is certainly a natural too! What adorable cakes you have both created.
I try my hand at cake decorating too. I have some DVDs from Wilton that I use. Problem is, when I practice we then have too much cake in the house. THAT I don't need :)
Take the advanced decorating class. Then, maybe someday you'll make Lauren's wedding cake for her :)
Blessings,
Sher
What are you talking about! These cakes are beautiful! Delicate and pretty, not overdone with gaudy flowers. Yours and Lauren's are by far the best. I love those little snails.
Debbie
My goodness! Those are awesome! Years ago I took a class or two on cake decorating and used to make my 3 daughter's bd cakes. Now I make them for my little grandsons, but these look so professional!
I love yours AND your daughters! WOW!
Donna
Wow, I think you did an amazing job! They are all nice but yours has really beautiful muted colors and soft pretty flowers, and the trailing leaves are just lovely. Lauren's is extremely well done, obviously some of your good taste has rubbed off on her. I think you should go for it and make the wedding cake, I'll bet it's the best one in the class.
Wow - Cindy yours is gorgeous! And Lauren - yours is gorgeous too!!! You both should be very proud - and now I'm craving a piece of cake and coffee... yummmmmmmmy!!!
xo,
Kim
Both the cakes are just beautiful. You both did a great job!! You should definately take the next class. Thank you for all of the nice pictures and be proud, you are very talented!!
Cindy, your cakes are beautiful!
You should NOT be disappointed.
I do well to just get frosting
on our cakes!! (frosting from a
can, I might add!) Guess I'm not
Betty Crocker or Martha!! LOL!
Where did you take your classes?
All of the cakes are wonderful.
Lauren's snails are pretty darn
cute!! Do the cakes taste as good
as they look???
Becky
Hi! I just discovered your great blog!!! yummmm......
Please visit my site, too, at:

Thanks, Cynthia
Oh my goodness, they are all just beautiful. My mom could do all those beautiful cakes. I just don't think I have the patience. How wonderful to take the class with your daughter. Hugs, Marty
And the problem with your cake is...????? Looks great to me!
Nice job all round and Lauren and the young fellow did real well considering their ages when most eat the delicacies instead of creating them...hehe.
p.s. The room makeover is not open to Canadians;I guess I'll have to see if we have something like going in this part of the continent but thanks all the same, I'll be watching.
Hugs Annabelle
I don't know why you aren't happy with your cake. They are both beautiful. And...go for the class. Then you can say you did it!
My mouth is just WATERING!!! Thanks a lot, I'm trying to lose 5 pounds. Time for a snack.
The decorating at the top reminds me of silk ribbon embroidery. Very pretty!
Brenda
What are you talking about - they are Wonderful!
You both did a wonderful job! They look great!
Ivy
Cindy, your cake is lovely. I think free-form sides like yours are very difficult. Your daughter's is precious ~ love her take on the flowers & the snails!!
My daughter can out do me on cakes or most anything for that matter!

Did you take these classes at Michael's? I've always wanted to do this, and now I HAVE to. Your cakes are so beautiful (not sure why you're disappointed in yours...it's gorgeous)!
WOW I am super impressed with all of the cakes! I cant believe these are intermediate level! I have wanted to take cake dec lessons, but have never done it, now, I dont know, it looks very daunting to me, yikes! What a fun mother daughter adventure! Sue
I think your cake came out great, Cindy, and so did Lauren's.
You are both creative gals.
Cindy both you and Lauren did a fabulous job. They look wonderful.
Alison
Lovely! I like the guitar/hawaiian cake....and the teen boy has a great future ahead of him in cakesca
The entire class did an outstanding job! I love both yours and Laurens cake. I can't see why your not happy with it, it's beautiful...You have got to be your own worst critic!!
Oh my..... what a feast for the eyes and creative senses!
I have to share your post with my sister, who has done some pretty amazing cakes in her day as well.
Thanks for sharing your art with us!
You are crazy (not really)! Your cakes are magnificent! When I first saw the picture I thought those could not be theirs. BUT, they were. I loved the your gorgeous cake and Lauren's darling one. Your parents must be so proud how talented you are. And you, so proud of your daughter.
Wendy
I love your cake. It's beautiful. You're too hard on yourself.
I don't know what you're talking about, that cake is beautiful!
The blue basket weave cake loks just like an old chennile bedspread! I love it! I used to decorate cakes as a side business when I was younger. It's a lot of work, and hard on your hands... and sitcky!
Blessings ~ Eileen@Star's Fault
My 21 used to love to do cake decorating... Maybe I should mention this to her. How fun for you and Lauren!
~Liz
They are both so beautiful! You will be making and selling cakes in no time at all.
Ginger
Your cake looks fabu!
Cindy, I hope everyone brought a pot of coffee and ice cream and had a delicious desert! :)
Pretty Impressive. Cake decorating is very interesting class to take.
They're beautiful, but I really just want to cut in and EAT them.:)
I love cake.
Your cake is LOVELY! I so wish I had even a teensy bit of your talent!
Cindy, moving from those gorgeous cakes to your wall colors. In your living room the background color looks like a creamy/ivory/buttery color. Do you have the name of the color and the brand? I need to get started painting before I can take a cake decorating class... Perhaps the colors you use in your house accents the tone.
Thanks.
I love both your cakes!! Those snails are so adorable on Lauren's cake, though! I think it's fabulous that you were able to do something so fun like this with your daughter! Was it expensive to take the classes at the bakery? Is it just a one night class for the beginners and one night for the intermediate? I'm really impressed with all of the cakes you shared!!! How much fun that must have been!!
Thanks so much!!

I think you and Lauren both did a fabulous job on your cakes.

Rebecca
My favorite part is the piping work on the side of your cake. Well done.
Those are lovely!
Those are lovely!
Hi Cindy,
OMG you never cease to amaze me!! You both did such a great job on the cakes, they look professional, maybe you two could start a business. I am the same way though I am always so critical of my own work! I never told you I made a tassel after you did it, which of course I thought yours looked much better, LOL, now you have me wanting to take a cake class and actually my Mom has been trying to get me to do this for years. You both should be proud of your work, it really is sooooo good (;
Hugs~Kelly
You are amazing! Your daughter Lauren has definitely inherited your creative and artistic talents. Is there anything you cannot do? Queen of blogland and perfectionist of all crafts? I am green with envy as they are amazing!
Edible Art!!! Beautiful!
Very nice! I think yours is just as lovely as your daughters. SHe has more of a freestyle whimsical theme which is easier to make 'perfect'. Yours looks great! Take the last one...worst case scenario you take it, your cake isn't great and you pretend it never happened! LOL
Miss Cindy, I think the cakes are delicious and delightful! I can see what you were going for. It must take lots of practice. And all of your co-workers and neighbors and friends I'm sure would like you and your daughter to practice a lot so they could visit. Your home and your cakes will give them much joy! You have given me a thought. I have wanted to take a cake class and now that I'm almost through painting my studio-(Marie Antoinette turquoise)-I am going to see if our local My Perfect Cake will do a class so I don't have to go to Michael's. I learn something every time I look at your blog. Thank you for being there for your friends on the east coast!
Looks great! It is wonderful that you and your daughter have fun doing this together! Have you ever checked out the blog called mennonite girls can cook blogspot . com ? They have fun cakes etc they have decorated - I know you would have fun and get ideas too. Have a great day!!!
Cindy, I think the cakes you and Lauren did are BEAUTIFUL. Yours reminds me of a vintage embroidered linen. Wow! Cheryl in California
How fun! That is something I've wanted to do.
Amazing cakes! I love yours; it looks elegant, and even better -- edible.
My decorated cakes end up looking like cement blocks. You did a GREAT job! I don't think you need an Advanced Class; just go with what you've already got!
Cass
I think your corneli lace looks great! That cake is a perfect representation of you. And Laurens is Adorable!!! I heart those little snails so much. Does she have a desire to get into cakes more? I think she would be great at it.
Have you heard of CakeCentral.com? You will LOVE the cakes there. I love that website.
http://cakecentral.com
I have been decorating cakes for about 3yrs now. I love it so much!!
Cindy, BOTH you and Lauren are extremely talented at cake decorating and I would encourage you both to sign up for the advanced class!
Many years ago, I took a cake decorating class so I know how much work goes into it and it's not as easy as it looks! About the only time I ever use what I learned in the class I took is when I make deviled eggs. I pipe the yolk filling in a fancy swirl! LOL.
All the cakes turned out so well! I took my classes years ago before fondant had gotten popular, so I still want to go back sometime to learn to work with fondant and gum paste. Cake decorating is such a fun art that is much appreciated by families and co-workers!
ok, yours and your daughters are definitely the best! what are you talking about?? yours turned out fabulous!!
I think your cake looked very nice. Simple and clean. And Laureens was nice as well. I could never do such a thing.
Hope you have a nice weekend.
Love Elzie
Whooo Hooooo! You won Penny's mosaic heart!!! http://lavenderhillstudio.blogspot.com/
Congratulations! ♥ Diane
just perfect this cake, and yes...maybe your daughter can be a cakedecorator/maker/baker in future!! maybe people can order one at your blog with special wishes and she can make it...
Hey Cindy! The cakes look great! Congrats on winning Penny's giveaway! Just wanted to let you know I nominated you for an award on my blog! Go check it out!
~Abigail
I think yours and Lauren's are amazing! I can barely icing a cookie. I would never be able to do something that looks like yours!
Hi Cindy! As someone who has trouble frosting a plain cake I say FANTASTIC JOB LADIES!!! Lauren, I think you will be decorating your own wedding cake and will save tons of money!!! and maybe even your Mom's future wedding cake (someday!) Very impressed! Too pretty to cut up and eat! Cindy, maybe you could put some poly on them and put them under one of your gorgeous cloches!lol Have a great week - Sincerely, Jeannette
Wow! Both of you should be so proud!
Goodness Cindy! You have alot of fans! This message might get lost in the swarm but I just had to tell you how beautiful your cakes are! Your daughter ought to be very proud of the cake she made! I think the top of her cake is the prettiest one! I took cake decorating years ago with some friends and my firstborn got to reap the rewards from that with some great cakes! Did a few anniversary cakes too and even did a wedding cake for a girl at our church and the wedding cake for my sister's wedding! I have since put up that apron! Don't know if I'd even remember how to make a rose! I gave all my cake decorating stuff to a friend. But your pics make me want to start again! Thanks for the pictures!
God Bless! Lauralu :)
I think both cakes are wonderful! I took a Wilton class a bazillion years ago in Saratoga and never did anything nearly as fancy! That lacy effect on the side of your cake always impresses me! I think the wedding cake sounds like fun. From what I understand, the biggest trick is to make sure your filling is stable enough to hold the weight of the cake. I think you've got the beautiful decorating part down pat! Well done!
Robin@Miscellaneous Thoughts
They all look awesome to me! I have been thinking about taking classes at Michael's.
Cindy, I think you did an amazing job on your cake and so did your daughter! I have always wanted to take a cake decorating class! I have a Wilton Cake Decorating kit. hugs, Ellen
Oh Cindy you're much too hard on yourself. There's NOTHING wrong with your cake! It looks awesome to me!!! VERY pretty in fact! :) You did an awesome job on it. Take the other class, don't quit now!!! You'll later wish you had if you don't! :)
You are way too hard on yourself. Your cake is VERY lovely!
I think both you and your daughter should go for it! Take the advanced class -- you both definitely have the talent!
You need more practice? What?? Hey, don't sell yourself short, your cake is beautiful. Before I read what you had to say, I looked at the photo and thought to myself, "That cake with the blue lacy design on the sides is really gorgeous."
I like your cake!! You have a great start to fab cakes. Kathy
I would love to do this. I made cupcakes yesterday, and icing ended up on the ceiling. :-) And on me.
I love your cake, and Lauren's, too.
I love them! You did a fabulous job.
What flavor are they? :)
Off Topic here....
My hubs and I were watching Rate My Space tonight and all of the sudden there you were!
"I know her!" I said to Ed. It was a proud moment.

fantastic!! wow!!
Your cakes are beautiful...I do love the snails on Lauren's!
Hubby & I took the classes from Wilton a couple of years ago & since then I've heard how better itis to take classes from independent bakeries. I think we may investiagte & take some more courses...we're really rusty anyway.
Very good.my daughter took classes yrs ago when she was in privat school. She was I thin about 14.She made gorgeous cakes.I have never tried...Ann
Tina: Yes they did air the episode I was on over the weekend. I woke up in the middle of the night Saturday night and flipped on the TV just as that episode was starting! I didn't even realize it was going to be on again!
It's nice finding something fun to do together with your teen. You should take the advanced class just for the quality time with Lauren. Both of your cakes are lovely. I wish you were here so I could contract you to do a cake for my daughters birthday. She would love those snails.
You both did such a great job on the cakes! They are precious!
I don't know why you don't like your cake. I think it's beautiful! And your daughter's cake...wow! She is one talented little lady!
I think my favorite, besides yours and Lauren's of course, is that cake that's made to look like a blue basket with roses on top. All in all, the class made great cakes!
Kady
I like your cake! It's simple and tasteful. A few of the others were a bit over the top. Laurens was by far the best! Great job to her!
Cindy, those cakes are lovely! I like yours as well as any and Lauren's is adorable! Thank you for sharing them with us.
Blessings,
Sandi
Both of you did an amzing job! And what fun to do it together!
I'm impressed!! I think you both did a beautiful cake!! Your classmates did a great job too!!
Wow. The cakes are gorgeous!! I've always wanted to take a class, but I'm so intimidated. I'm not artistic at all....except musically - and I don't think that will help me with cake decorating - haha
Thanks for sharing.
PS - where did you take your classes
HiYa Cindy, have not been by for a visit for a while but your blog is gorgeous as always! Cakes look beautiful, too nice to eat!! Love you teapost giveaway but am waaaaay over in Australia so will just admire from afar :0)
