When you have a home that is so summery like mine it's a challenge to decorate with fall colors! I decided to just decorate my dining room table this year. I started with a birdbath that I filled with spanish moss and then filled with dried hydrangeas.
I added some berries and the long trailing mossy stuff which I bought at Michaels. You can click on the photos to see it close up. The birdbath sitting in the middle of the table looked really bare so I added the other items you see.
The birdbath was given to me by my landlord, the birdcage is from my mom and the hydrangeas from my former mother-in-law. I sure do have a lot of generous women in my life, don't I?

Also, a couple of you asked how Judy dries her hydrangeas. She hangs them outside, upside down from her covered patio. If you live in a humid climate this might not work so well though.

I have a similar birdbath that I found at Home Goods.
There are to large bushes of Hydrangeas across the street. I think I'll go over and cut some to dry them .
We need a weather change for us fall lovers. The warm weather is for the birds.

It's awful hard to do the fall decorating early in NH because that means winter and snow is not far behind. But we have leaves changing already so I guess it's time for me to break out the great stuff I have for fall.
Wow, With Mom's and former Mom's I'm not surprised. But a landlord? That is so sweet of her to think of you. I have so many hydrangeas but I live right on the coast in Ventura county. It almost always has a marine layer. Every morning the outside is damp. Can't wait to see the cabinet tomorrow.
I guess it would be hard to combine the fall colors with your summery cheerful apt. Never thought of that. I think the other seasons would be easy as winter colors go great with white and spring is always bright and cheerful.
But you did a great job. I have lots of hydrangea bushes but I never dry them. I'm not much for dried flowers. Everytime I have them they just end up falling apart and getting dusty and look bad.
I don't know why. I just don't have luck with them.

I live in the south and have dried hydrangeas before --- just stood them up in a vase without water and they dried all by themselves!
I pick the hydrangeas when the flowers feel "leathery", now in Massachusetts, and put them in a vase with about a half inch of water. When they finish drinking the water they dry nice as can be.

Very pretty! It's a challenge to incoprate orange into my decor (so I don't do orange pumpkins and all that). But I love the hydrangeas (I cut some from my garden this am.) It's still pretty hot here so I just can't work up the enthusiasm to get any fall stuff out just yet :-)

That looks beautiful! A color that I think would be very pretty in your home would be a soft muted ginger color. Soft fluffy throw, needlepoint pillows- could be very cute!

Here is an easy way to solve a decorating delema that I've not seen used anywhere else...
I have a red couch. I am able to decorate for all seasons or holidays around it. I just throw colored pillows or color cordinated throw blankets on it. For example... Pink and red throw pillows on the red couch for Valentines day. Rose patterned accesories for Summer. Blue and white added for July 4th. Orange and brown for Autumn or Thanksgiving. Green of course to go with the red couch for Christmas.
I enjoyed peeking at your blog and appreciate all of your hard work in putting it out there for us to view. You mentioned the women in your life. As a reader, I'm curious and must ask; What do the men in your life think of your romantic home?

Just a quick question - on a piece of furniture like this, do you use a semi- or high gloss paint? And do you always prime it or is it easier to distress if it is unprimed?

Hi Cindy, I am with you. I find it hard to decorate with fall colors because my house is in spring colors. I usually use white pumpkins, dried pomagranites, grapes and soft green leaves. It is the hardest season for me. Your blog has inspired me. Thankyou for sharing. Kathysue[rms friend]

Those hydrangeas are unbelievable. Thanks for the tip: I've been drying mine just by sticking them in a vase and they are not that beautiful. I'll try the upside down thing while I still have a few blooming outside.

Hydrangeas are the best. They also make a gorgeous wreath, just wire them onto a base (wire, straw, grapevine, whatever) Tie with a great big lace bow--ta da!
