Thrift Store Chintz!

Pin It Now!

I found this Royal Winton Chintz teapot at the thrift store for $5.99. When I got up to the cash register I found out it was on sale and I only paid $4.10! It's not a pattern or color I would usually be interested in but I knew it was worth a lot more so when I came home I looked on eBay. There was one up for bid and a few days later I checked back and it sold for $67.00. The shape on that was was a little rounder and didn't have the little flared bottom like mine but it was the same pattern. Mine is also chipped on the spout but I don't plan on selling it anyway.
It joined my other chintz in my little wall cabinet my dad made. See...not all my furniture is painted white! My mom thinks I should paint this. I have no problem painting antique pieces of furniture but it's a whole different story when it's something my dad made for me! He sold some of these painted white but way back in the early 90s when he made this for me I requested this color. What do you think? Should I paint it?

Yeah for DAVID COOK! LOVE HIM!

Your blog just gets better and better. I would leave this piece as it is. I think it's more interesting to have different colored pieces to look at. What a beautiful cabinet...Where is this cabinet located in your house? The pieces you have in it are really pretty. I so look forward to your future blogs.

No, I wouldn't paint it. Love your collection of chintz!

I don't think you should paint it. It makes a nice contrast against the chintz pieces and is special just the way it is!

I wouldn't paint it because I would want it just the way he made it.

I adore chintz dishes. My coffee cup is a chintz pattern, and no one else better dare use it. ;-0

The queen of painted furniture is asking US if she should paint it???? Of course you should. I have never seen you mess up anything with paint. Go for it. We here in Tulsa are so happy today-David Cook has lived here the last several years. Yea David!

Good Morning Cindy!
I love your teapot! What a great find... and it is right at home with your pretty collection.

Do whatever your heart tells you to do with that special piece from your father... it is gorgeous and I KNOW it is precious.

It's a beautiful piece and I don't think that you should paint it. It makes a nice contrast to all of your blue and white.

If I were you, I wouldn't paint it just because you don't sound like you are comfortable with painting it. Leave it the way it is for now and if you ever truly want to paint it--do it!

Nancy said...

Please don't paint it. My DH makes furniture and would cringe!!

I think your cabinet is beautiful, as is. As was mentioned earlier, it's a nice contrast against the white. I also think it nicely showcases your collection.

I wouldn't paint it..the existing color adds warmth...

NO! Don't paint it... leave it the way your Dad made it for you.
And I am so attracted to homes that have a mix of woods... more pleasing to the eye and they define each other better, rather than getting lost.
Hope that makes sense.

I'm trying again - I had to delete my earlier comment because I had mispelled! I love the cabinet, as for painting it- you do such a wonderful job when you paint anything...but if you have a sentimental feeling because your Dad made it and you want to keep it that way, then that's okay, too!

I love the teapot - its charming.

As for David Cook - we were thrilled when he won!

Well, I love it just the way it is. You are so lucky to have such a talented and generous dad!

I just love your blog ~ one of the few I check everyday :-) I don't think I'd paint it - it's just lovely the way it is and because your Dad made it I'd leave it that way. Thanks for sharing your home and all of your wonderful decorating ideas!

What a pretty teapot! I agree that the cabinet should be left as is. All your painted pieces are so pretty, but I agree that the contrast of the wood will accentuate everything better. Have a great day!

What a great find! Your new teapot looks great in the cabinet your father made for you. You will know what to do about painting it. It is special the way it is because he made it for you - and it stands out from all of your white pieces. Like a place of honor! ~Adrienne~

I agree with all of those who say, don't paint it. I think a little contrast with the white warms up a room. It's not like a huge armoir in the room, it's just a little accent piece, and your Dad made it for you. Also it looks like it is a pretty color of wood anyways.
Let us know what you decide.

I think this time Cindy I would leave it just the way your Dad made it.. it is absolutely beautiful!! I once had a gorgeous Chintz tall coffee pot, when I was selling on ebay I decided to sell it, yes I made a big profit, but now so sorry I sold it especially after seeing your lovely collection!

I think you should go ahead and paint it, if that's what you want. It will still be that special cabinet your dad made for you. Love love love your blog btw, I visit it almost every day!

Should you paint your cupboard? I think not becos of it's history. A little piece of lace or doily hanging over the edge on each shelf will make it a little bit more "romantic home" style and give you some white. I think it is very pretty with its arched top!

Ceekay-THINKIN of HOME said...

Here's my 2 cents worth....don't paint it....It is so beautiful just the way he made it for you!!

Jenni B said...

That's a good question! I do like the white look, but it's nice to have some variety as well. And especially since it's a sentimental piece...leave it as is. :)

Your blog looks like a lot of fun! Glad I found it!

Sorry, I got mezmerized by David, lol! I would paint the cabinet for sure!

I love your other painted furniture, but prefer the warmth of the woodgrain on this piece. It makes a nice contrast, a toucn of texture.

Anonymous said...

Hi Kim, It's a pretty cupboard either this way or white. Sometimes a little wood color just punctuates the white. Nice deal on the chintz.

What a great find. I would leave the cabinet as it is. It looks very nice with your chintz collection.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! That's the teapot you were talking about????
Holy Coalinga! That's CLYDE! Oh, does my cousin love that pattern! That is quite a find!!! Even with the chip! $4.10!!!! WOW!
Your cupboard would look great painted, but since your dad made it, it just seems like it's better the way it is. In the future, if you somehow, accidently, spill red nail polish or grape juice on it...
maybe then you can paint it! :)

You always get the best treasures when you go to the thrift stores! I love that tea pot.

If I were you I would not paint the cabinet. Not everything has to be painted white. It's such a pretty color as it is.

It's always nice to have something a little different.

I was also thrilled David Cooke won! Even though I thought last nights show was a bit dull.

Cindy your teapot is gorgeous and what a stunning price!! I so love the cabinet your father made for you and your chintz pieces are awesome there. I'm partial to white furniture, but like you, I'm not sure I would paint a piece my father made for me. I'm also very sentimental, and would feel I'm painting over places where his capable hands had worked to create something special just for me. Although I'm partial to white, I do have some wood/oak pieces that mix very well with the white. xoxo

Such a sweet teapot and I love the color of your cabinet....I would leave it. Yes, yay for David Cook! :0)

I would white wash it! You would dilute the white paint down a bit and wipe it off, giving it a hint of white paint. The paint would then give a "antiquing" look around the applique. It would be really pretty with the chintz.

Glenda said...

I would leave it be. It's always nice to have something a little different.
Although I've decided to redo my parent bedroom furniture and paint it white. That will be a big job.

And a great find in the teapot.

Hi Cindy,

Don't you love when you find a
"diamond in the rough". I love
looking in thrift stores, what fun.

I like the cabinet the way it is.
Since your Dad made it for you.

I am learning a lot of good tips, from your blog. You are doing a great job!

Hi Cindy,
Cute little teapot, you've got the eye for great finds. I know what you mean, I have a piece from the 1940's and it is not painted and I am not going to paint it. I agree with Kim, just follow your heart, you'll make the right decision.

Hugs,
LeAnn:)

I have been on a painting freenzy lately but there are things I still can not bring myself to paint. I don't think I would paint this cabinet- it is so beautiful just as it is! It looks so good holding all of your chintz- what a deal by the way! Wow!
I love how you displayed your shells and love your new dishes- they are so beautiful. I am "dish crazy" according to my husband. I see dishes I love, and know I don't need anymore, but I just can't help myself. They are just like little pieces of art. And what is the harm in having more art in your home?!?

I would leave the cabinet just like it is, it has sentimental value to you. Just for thought, change the lace on shelf with a scalloped eade lace.

I wouldn't paint the cabinet. That's the perfect color of wood that goes with white-painted furniture.

Cindy - I would not paint that beautiful piece. Your home is so beautiful, but as others have said, it's nice to have some contrast here and there. You have so many pretty things and a real knack for displaying everything so nicely. It is a pleasure to look at your blog every day.

I think that if you want to paint it, that you should. (Especially since your dad made others that he painted, I doubt he'd be offended.) I think maybe your colors have changed a little since the 90's when he made the cabinet for you, and it isn't a bad thing to paint it if you want. (I don't think so anyway, but then again, I paint all my furniture white, so I'm a little biased, I guess.)
I think it matters more how we treat the ones we love, the time we spend with them more important~ and if we have a good relationship with them, a little paint won't change that because they know your heart. Now I will step off my soap box, and sign off! :) Take care!

I've been having the same debate with myself about a hopechest that my dad made for me. At the time he made it, I picked out the stain and hardware. I still love the hardware, but I've been tempted to paint the hopechest white.....just haven't been able to bring myself to do it since it was my dad that made it.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE David Cook!!!!!!! I'm THRILLED it was him that won!!! YAY!!!!!

What a piece of beauty! I think because your father made it lovingly for you, is the reason you are struggling with painting it. I feel the same way with pieces that my dad restored for me. I say wait for now.......

I love the chintz designs. Paint the cabinet? I love white but I can see your dilema. I think I would wait about painting it. If you're not sure you probably shouldn't.

Love the teapot! I've recently discovered that I like chintz LOL, but sadly, don't own any yet. Your collection is beautiful!
I have the same painting dilemma with my dresser. My mom and grandpa made me a wonderful, HUGE oak dresser, and while I would love for it to be white, I think my mom would kill me LOL I'd leave your shelf unpainted.

I LOVE the warm tones of the cabinet your Dad made. I wouldn't TOUCH a thing. I love mixing wood tones.

And DAVID COOK....OH YES...!!!

We were woooo hoooing it and celebrating OUT LOUD...:)

I love him too...:)

As usual, all looks lovely, and OH those FLOWERS...I will NOT show you mine....!!!!

Happy Holiday, Have fun and be safe.

NO NO NO...no to paint. I love the look of a little pine mixed in with the white. It grounds things. If you have NOTHING in a natural, all your white is going to look as if it wants to float to the ceiling. My humble opinion, of course

My thoughts on painting things you love. If your father was around and you said "hey Dad I want to paint this thing" what would HE say? I have a bookshelf my grandpa made and he would have said "Go for it" but my grandmother gave me a drum table (that I would ADORE painted) and I resist doing it b/c she would be MORTIFIED. LOL
