My bedroom - Show and Tell Friday

Pin It Now!

Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!  My bedroom is still a work in progress but it's getting there! It has sort of been the catch-all room since I moved in here last month. I had everything I didn't know what to do with piled in a corner.  Last weekend I finally got rid of a few things, stuffed other things in my closet and under my bed so I didn't have to look at the mess anymore!

I have large, ugly, old aluminum window in my bedroom with ugly vertical blinds.  I would love to put some drapes over it but there is an electric heater that runs right under the window so that probably would be very unsafe! I usually keep that blind closed all the time because it looks right out onto a walkway that goes out to the pool and tennis courts so it gets lots of traffic.

I still love my headboard that I got free on Craigslist! It got a whole new life with some appliques and white paint!

I painted my bedroom set years ago and it was a huge job but I'm so glad I did it!

My new bedroom is a lot larger than my old bedroom. I didn't even realize that until we moved all the furniture in!  The door on the left goes to the bathroom (as you can see) and the door on the right is a huge walk-in closet!  It's about the same size as the bathroom!  Since we don't have very much storage here, it not only holds all my clothes and shoes but lots of other household things too.  I dreamed of having a beautiful walk-in closet for my clothes, shoes and jewelry but not this closet, it holds all that plus everything else...craft supplies, ironing board, sleeping bags, chafing dishes...you name it, it's in there! Good thing there are lots of shelves!

Below is the ugly other side of the room that I'm still working on.  I need a lampshade for that lamp and I still have to figure out what I'm going to do in the right-hand corner.  I have my small TV in that cabinet. I think I'm going to paint that and hang it and use that table as a desk but I'm not sure yet. I need somewhere to keep my big black printer and I'm thinking I can put it on that table. I'll need a way to camouflage it though!

As you can see, my bedroom is right off the living space...no hallways! Good thing I make my bed every morning!  I'm thinking of painting the wall that the bed is on a Robin's Egg Blue.  I'll have to paint it back to the original color when I move out though. Of course I'll have to buy new throw pillows that match! Stay tuned... that may be an upcoming project!

The living room has crown molding but the bedrooms don't. I sure wish they would have put it in all the rooms! It makes such a difference as you can see in the photo above! I love crown molding!  Oh...how much better the bedroom would look with crown molding!

I also think I need to add some art or plates or something on the wall.

I think that large birdcage in the corner will be replaced with a huge mirror I found on Craigslist!  It's 5'8" tall!  I've sold a bunch of stuff on craigslist so that mirror will be basically free!  Hopefully I will be getting it sometime this week. I will have to paint it white though! I plan on just leaning it in the corner since I don't have a full size mirror in my bedroom. I'll still have to secure it though since this is earthquake country and I would want it to fall on the dogs!

What a sweet room Cindy! You must be feeling quite comfortable in your new home now. It's truly lovely. (And yes...plates would be gorgeous over your bed.)

I noticed the sweet birds on your bedside table. Quite a few years ago I found that same piece at a terrific price and mailed it to my friend for her birthday. I never thought about how heavy it was. Shipping it cost way more than the sweet birds. Good thing my friend still has it and enjoys it. ;) I love seeing how you are displaying yours.

Best wishes for an Extraordinary weekend!!

I think your bedroom looks just beautiful! I would love a closer look at that chair by the window. I think I just found the same chair at Goodwill but not looking as pretty as yours...yet! I would be putting coverings on the window--maybe at least during times of the year when the heat doesn't turn on? I think the wall will look lovely birds egg blue. Our bedroom also opens to the livingroom in our small house. There is a hallway that has the kids' bedrooms. If I don't make the bed I just close the door :) Thanks for hosting...enjoyed your post!

I think your new apartment is looking really pretty. I agree with the other commenter about using/seeing the French chair more. As for your room, I have a few suggestions:

1) Put the new mirror between the bathroom and closet (where you currently have the wicker chair).
2) Add blue toile plates (like the one you had in your old kitchen) above the headboard in an arch to mimic the headboard.
3) Remove the wood hutch and paint it a soft blue. Set that on top of the tall dresser.
4) Take the table your wood hutch was on and add the French chair and place the oval wicker mirror over the table, making a pretty French vanity. You can add your antique silver brush/comb set to accessorize (you know how to accessorize so you'll figure that out).
5) I'd lose the wicker chair. If you need to keep it for the dogs, I'd put it in the corner near the bathroom where you have that other birdcage. You can always move that over to the area near the window.
6) As for the window area, instead of curtains, you could always add a pretty screen-instead of an oriental screen, you could even make one using toile fabric similar to the ones in your pillow.
7) Also, not sure if there is enough room, if you got rid of the wicker chair you could always add a pretty bench to the edge of the bed, maybe in the same blue velvet that's on the chair, and use that for the doggies.

Overall, the new apartment is really pretty. I can relate to your decorating challenges since I lived in a similar style apartment for some ten years.

Your bedroom is lovely, the new apartment is really coming together! You could make a cover for the printer - like the ones for sewing machines :) to match the robin egg blue of course lol. Thanks for the party!

Thank you so much for hosting this great party.
Your apartment is very nice and I love what you have done to your bedroom.
My son wants me to move up to Los Gatos and I would have to sell my home and move into an apartment, but I have 2 dogs, but I see that you have dogs. Are you close to Los Gatos and do you have a patio? It will be a big change for me but less work and I am not giving up my dogs.
Have a wonderful weekend.

I'm so glad that you maximize your storage by using that under-bed space--me too, Cindy! I'm loving what you've done so far to make the place yours. I'll look forward to a dreamy blue focal wall. And maybe lace shirred on tension rods in that window would give you some privacy but disguise the aluminum windows? I know you'll find a creative solution and it's worth having a home with such great healthy exercise amenities!

Hi Cindy,
I recognize the cabinet in your bedroom as the one that used to house your chintz...I missed it when you moved it out of your living room in your old apartment.
What became of the chintz?
Your new apartment is beautiful, I look forward to every new post!
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Hi Cindy: Your bedroom is looking gorgeous! I'd love to see what you decide to do to hide your printer. I'm going to start working on my little home office, and am looking for ideas to hide some of the bulky computer items. Have a great weekend!

Thanks so much for hosting, Cindy! It's always a pleasure to browse your party:-)
That window in your bedroom with the heat right below is a bummer... My suggestion would be a nice new shade with a matching valance to make a statement of it rather than to make it blend out of sight. The valance can be something frilly and come half-way down the window without danger from the heater below :-)
May light, love and laughter fill your weekend!
Blessed be,
Michael

Your bedroom looks great! How could it not with your pretty furniture and bedding. Don't worry too much about that crown molding...as soon as you get your plates or art on the wall you'll forget about it. I can totally envision the big mirror in there!!

Hi Cindy,
I've been thinking about the window challenge. Love the idea of having a shade--even a cordless blind because then you can filter light and it retracts nearly flush at the top or opt for a reflective or blackout type for privacy. That would allow you to have a drape that you wouldn't have to pull closed. You might want a sheer curtain (robin's egg blue?) over that with a drape (or stationary panel drapes on each side), but just have them come to the bottom of the window sill, so as not to interfere with the heating unit. It will still be very elegant in your lovely bedroom.

Rena Designs said...

Cindy why don't you have a piece of crown molding added to your headboard wall. It will be visible from the doorway. How about wooden shutters that close, hung in your window? Gives that cottage feel. But your room, and your whole apartment for that matter, is coming along very nicely. Enjoy!

Victoria said...

Your bedroom looks gorgeous Cindy! Could you maybe put some time of curtain that pulls up? Like a blind type of thing. Or put sheers up and tie them at the bottom so they don't touch the heater!

Everything looks amazing, can't wait to see more:)

I'm loving your updates! I have the same window/heater situation in my bedroom and I have curtains hung from the ceiling to the floor and there is no problem with the heater. Also, if you have the "mini blinds' that have strings down each side through small holes...be careful - people can see through the holes if it's dark outside and you have your lights on. This happened to a friend of mine who had a "regular" window peeper looking through hers! Sorry to be a downer about that!

Your apartment is lovely, it takes a while to settle in, keep moving things around (I'm still doing it years later). A suggestion for the ugly window - I have one too. I hung a lace panel over it with a tension rod and then drapes that I open and close that are just to the bottom of the window, no where near the rad that is under the window.

What a beautiful room! Love the bedspread! As a matter of fact, I own it too! :) Your dresser is almost just like mine too, but mine is cherry wood. My mom stained it that color when I was young and I just can't paint it! Right now, I have a light sea foam green/aqua quilt, which I think compliments the dark wood. Happy Spring Cindy! Thanks so much for hosting and sharing!:)

Love your new bedroom. For the window on the walkway, you might try (temporary) stick on frost or lace http://www.harrietcarter.com/lace so the light can come in but no one can see in. Good luck!

Just love how this (cottage) apartment is coming together! Having been a military wife for many years all my decorating had to be cheap and non-permanent. You might go to any big box store and buy vinyl exterior shutters (very easy to paint), add four sets of hinges down to connect shutters. Then stand IN window on window sill. Buy drapery rod, hang a panel each side to hide edges of shutter (and added privacy)and in center on same rod- (not one long valance over all)-unless money permits. Now you have cottage look, light AND privacy, heater problem solved. What about a spindle-back bench in front of window with cushion for dogs? Cushion could be covered in a third drapery panel. Think of the fu-fu lacy or floral throw pillows you could add for charm! Bottom then is open for heat, and, adds charm to room. My favorite so far is view from kitchen to patio...perfection, great vibe! Lov'in the whole place! THANKS for sharing such a great under-taking with all of us fans! The very best to you!

Oh Cindy it's all coming together so nicely with your signature style. I always love to see how pieces are worked into new settings. Editing isn't easy when it comes to a new home, but you are doing a wonderful job. I can't tell you how much I look forward to your next post. You are such a dear to share with us. Oh and p.s. congrats on an enormous walk-in, multi- functional closet! I am green with envy ( the good kind)! Lol. Hugs...Fay

You've worked wonders on your new bedroom! Loved it! I had a thought, have you considered a fabric section of wall stapled behind the headboard, you could glue trim on to hide the staples, then you wouldn't have to repaint when you move.... Of course, you could make a pillow to match the fabric wall for your bed or chair too. ☺

À move is always fun, and when it's dolled up with your white romance it makes it that much more fun.

Love the room, love the bed and the embellished beauty.

Love x 18!

I have only a few moments to dash off a comment with these thoughts:

The window: Been here before with this predicament. What I did was add the window treatment I wanted, which was simple sheers, and inserted two rods-- one tension rod at the top and one tension rod into the bottom hem pocket. No heat was lost and the look I needed was achieved.

We travel often, so while we're gone, Hubby wanted something to cover his large desktop computer flatscreen. Enter an attractive pillowcase! You could sew your own, or do what I did and snip open one long seam and stitch up the pillowcase's original opening. Tada! Attractive dustcover!

Hugs and happy highways,
Kelley~
