A sad day!

Pin It Now!

My company had a re-org today and unfortunately my job was eliminated.

It's a very scary place to be with the economy the way it is. I found this job almost 10 years ago after being laid off during the dot-com bust in 2001.  I'm hoping I have the same good luck finding a job this time!

If anyone in Silicon Valley (San Francisco Bay Area) knows of an open Executive Assistant or Administrative Assistant job please let me know. I have a lot of experience supporting Directors and VPs in high tech and medical device companies.

I'll be okay financially until at least late Spring of 2012 but the sooner I find a job the better!

I am sorry to hear that you must find a new job. I am a firm believer in "when one door closes another one opens" YOU are very talented and will be drawn to a new position very soon-look at it like it is an adventure you are about to embark on and let the journey begin! I like change but some people are afraid of change.
We have been in our home for 16 years and sometimes I would like to sell and move to a smaller home, with less work to do. More time to enjoy ourselves and just take time to be and not worry!
Maybe the loss of this job will

Before I say one thing, I saw that little "you might also like" at the bottom of this post and it was about your son, Vince; must have missed it from before. What a handsome, high-achieving young man. These are the blessings!

Sometimes the loss of a job doesn't seem like a blessing, but it can lead to another really right thing, if you don't have a nervous breakdown in between being out of work and getting to the new work.

I was in your line of work for 25 years. Of about 7 jobs in that time, my job was eliminated in 3. On my very last job, I realized I was in jeopardy when a meeting was called with the region office to which I was not invited; as soon as everybody went to lunch, I thumbed thru my "boss's" notepad and, sure enough, my position was being eliminated across the region's offices. It was suggested we "justify" my position, so I wrote up a 10-page description of my duties and, to be really safe, took on about 50% more work from other managers, didn't submit my overtime hours...and continued working 12-hr days. I made myself so sick over it, one day I thought "what would be the worst thing that would happen if I lose this job; how can I prepare myself for the scare and shock of termination, and what will I do NOW?" Hmmm...it started looking good, like maybe it wasn't such a bad thing; I was so miserable anyway. I wound up doing them a favor and submitted my resignation, without having anything else in my pocket. It was so liberating. I'm not saying I didn't miss the money, but I landed on my feet and, you know what Cindy, you will as well.

This just makes me so mad, though, that this happened to you right when it seems like everything else in your life is going so well. It's the cycle thing; we don't seem sometimes to get to rest too easy before, WHAM, something "character-building" has to happen.

If you're okay for a few months financially, why not try your best to enjoy this favorite time of year, Thanksgiving thru Christmas; try to look at it as a gift, enjoying the things you already have on hand to decorate. You can start the new year in earnest for the job seeking. Easier said than done, I know, but it's my unsolicited advice. Will be thinking of you; chin up, Cindy! Your sunny personality will get you thru anything!

You know, this just happened to my sister-in-law and she's been with the same firm for 25 years. They said she wasn't bringing in enough new business (insurance sales). She was just a couple of years from "normal" retirement although, with the economy, was going to extend it to age 67 or so. Her husband was let go in his fifties, too, just like her. He went on to get a job he liked better, and got in a good ten years before retiring this year; I know she will, too. In "the old days," though, it seems like a lot of experience and years on the job meant something; was protective. Not so anymore, obviously, sadly. Reinvention can be really uplifting, though. I agree with other bloggers here, in terms of you personally. Look at how you've embraced new things in the last couple of years, Cindy; you haven't gotten stagnant at all! This is just another thing to turn into something good for yourself, I'm sure of it!

My husband is currently working three jobs to support us (and he's no spring chicken); came in late tonight and I told him about your job loss, as I'd just left your site. He shook his head solemnly and said, "it's happening all over the country." He's on pins and needles about his primary job because he's a state employee via the university system; I'm talking about "broke" California. He's worried he could lose his job at any time. Isn't it a shame? There's such a feeling of uncertainty "out there." People just want to work hard at a good job and feel secure. I think what's really "telling" is how you can be talking to someone, and everybody knows somebody who is having job issues. Even with this post, a few bloggers have indicated the same. I know it's not a club you want to belong to, Cindy, but hope and prayer are powerful things...and you have good, recent job skills! And you're very hirable because you're a cutie patootie.

Hi Cindy - this is my first visit to your blog and I was thrilled to see the huge flood of support and encouragement for you at this challenging time. I am a "retired" Personal/Executive Assistant and throughout my 47 years in the workforce found that on a couple of occasions when I was a casualty of similar corporate decisions, an even better opportunity was never far away. During the waiting process I engaged in contract/temp work and at least 2 of those led to long-term employment (1 for 8 years and the other for 5 years). Be encouraged - sometimes God allows these temporary hiccups in our lives to remind us to rely on His provision for our circumstances, and He never disappoints!

Cindy, I just read this as I had not had a chance to visit the blog for a while. I'm so sorry to hear this. I only know too well how it must feel, as the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago when I lost my job. It was a shock and no one understands how it feels unless they've been through it themselves. But I've seen a lot of admin positions on job sites like Monster and with your experience, I'm sure you will find something soon. Same thing also happened to a couple of my friends and they both found jobs within a few weeks. So keep positive and keep believing that this will actually steer you toward something even better! Best of luck in your search!
