Backyard Topiaries - Show and Tell Friday

Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!  I don't think I've ever shared my backyard topiaries on my blog before.  I've wanted to but they really don't photograph very well. They look much nicer in person.  I decided to just post them anyway!  The one above is about 5 feet tall!  I bought the topiary metal form on sale years ago at a garden shop that was going out of business and started it with a tiny little potted ivy plant. It took a couple years to fill in.  I think I've had this about 10 years now!

I had hopes for this impatiens topiary plant to fill in a little better but I think I need to plant some more impatiens in it!  It's grown a lot though. I only planted it about a month ago.  I picture this with a big ball of flowers on the top...we'll see if I can get that to happen!

This is a wreath shaped topiary that looks so much better in person than it does in this photo! I started this one from a small plant years ago!  I put a brick in the dirt so I could sit this concrete angel in it.

I have a couple of these ball shaped ivy topiaries. This one is a single and I also have a double ball.  Every time I see these topiaries for sale in garden centers I'm shocked at how expensive they are. They are really easy to start, they just take a couple years to fill out.  You can see how big the vine is wrapped around the stem of the ball.

Here's a new one I started.  You can see in this photo the type of form I use for these.  I planted impatiens in the bottom and the ivy is just starting to make it up to the ball on the top. I wrap the ivy around the pole and tie it place. Once it gets going you can remove the wire.

This one is my favorites though!  It looks really nice during the holidays when I put white lights on it!

  4. Cindy, your topiaries are impressive. I don't have long term luck growing the ivy topiaries. They end up getting spider mites or heat stroke. The longest I kept one healthy was a couple of years. Topiaries are a favorite form for me, so I add them when I find some that will work. I've grown a few of my own too. Thanks for sharing this post. Loved seeing your beautiful topiaries.

  17. Your topiaries are wonderful Cindy! I've always wanted one of those, now I'm going to have to get one.
Does the ivy do okay in full sun or does it need a shady yard? Do you have to move it inside in the Winter?
Your garden with all the statues, flowers and topiaries is just gorgeous!
    Thanks for hosting!
