Pin It Now!
I've decided to do something I should have done a long time ago... I'm going back to school to become an Interior Designer! Lauren is now almost 18 so I thought it's time for me to do what I should have done when I was 18. I remember looking into it back then but decided against it. Over the years I've thought about doing it numerous times but with having a family and working full time, I just couldn't make it work. I think now is the time! It's a two-year program if you go full-time so it will probably take me at least 5 years since I will be going just a couple nights a week. I can then continue on to a 4 year degree if I choose. I think what really made me decide to move forward with this is if I get laid off from my job at the big Fortune 100 company I work for, it would be a lot harder to find a job now that I'm at the age I'm at...which is almost 50! It's always good to have a back-up plan...

Hi Cindy,
I'm so happy you are going back to school. I did the same thing at 50. Best of Luck on your journey.
You go girl! That was my major in college but I did not finish and wish I had all the time! So go live your dream, sounds like a great plan!!
Linda
Good for you!!! That is the perfect path for you, you would make a great decorator. Live Your Dream!
Good for you!!! That is the perfect path for you, you would make a great decorator. Live Your Dream!
How exciting this is! You definitely have the talent so go for it!!!
I voluntarily left my job in Dec. of 2008 due to a move and still haven't found anything so a back up plan is good!
Yayyy you!!!
Best of luck!
How wonderful!
I'm sure that, given your incredible sense of style, you'll be utterly fabulous at it!
Congrats!
Anne
Congrats, Cindy. I have had a few job decorating, although I donot have a degree in it. I would love to get a degree, but the nearest collge that offers the program is 1 hr and 20 min away. Are you attending classes or doing it online?
Best of Luck!
Robin
Good for you, great news!
Go for it!!!! You'll never regret it.
I will be 52 in May and I just went back for graphic design! I won't lie, it's hard Cindy, and hard on your blogging, but there comes a time when it's more important to follow your dreams. We all know you have what it takes! Congratulations, you go girl!
Congratulations!!! I think you will be a wonderful designer. I am so excited for you.

A big WAHOO for Cindy.
You may or may not know that I am currently in the final stretch of design school.
Begining tomorrow and M~W and F of next week I will be sharing this semesters final design projects. Needless to say this series might be of GREAT interest to you.
Congrats Cindy, My son is now 2 and I'm going back to school just to have a degree completed, everytime I got a chance I tell kids how important is to stay in school and do what you really have to do in order to do what you want to do later in life, Kudos Cindy!
Good for you, you know we will all be rooting for you all the way. I am sure there are several who would like to be there with you. Good luck at school.
I think it's a good idea.
Alfazema
Congratulations and all the very best always..
I think that is wonderful, Cindy. You will be perfect for that kind of job, and I think even the schooling for it should be fun.
Good for you!!
You picked a perfect time for it. By the time you are finished the economy should have recovered even more... :)
Best wishes...I've considered doing the same. I have a B.A in nutrition that I have never done anything with...my passion is Art and I began college as an Art major...so I've considered going back for an Art degree. Still not sure if I will...the age thing I think is hindering me...but you've inspired me!
Congratulations, Cindy! You are going to LOVE school. I started school this year for art- something that I should have done when I was 18 also also and like you, I also just entered my 50s. It's a wonderful thing when you can do in life what you really love to do! (:
Good for you, Cindy!! It's never too late to follow your dream. Best of luck!
Rachel
Cindy, good for you! You have a natural talent for interior design and pursuing a formal education in this area will be so very fulfilling. Much luck to you! ~Arleen
Best of luck!
*hugs*
Oh Cindy that sounds great! good for you...and I love the photo you've used in today's post, btw!
interior design is what I thought I wanted to do with my life when I was 18 too....
;but my oldest son is 14 while my daughter is 9 and now is not the time! lol
ciao bella
hope you have fun and stick with it!
creative carmelina was here...
and i'm hosting a giveaway.....
With the talent you already posses you have your studies in the bag. I think you will go far in your new endeavor.
I cam from a family business of interior design. I know how demanding it can be. I watched my family put in late hours which at times went unrewarded by their clients but then... its so gratifying when you know a job has been completed and your heart is full and the client is elated.
congratulations Cindy....its really a good thing to do:)
I hope to start at school in eastern....two years full time..at interiør design...strange.we are dooing the same thing in a grown up age:):) I have think the same since i was very young...but it not always possible...but no the time is there:)Lucky us:)
have a nice day/evening
eddaHugs to you:)
Wonderful decision, Cindy! You are going to love minute of it, I'm sure. You already have a "decorator's eye" so you're a step ahead! Best of luck!
Go for it, Cindy! Fantastic idea - it is never too late to do what you dream of doing.
xo
Claudia
How wonderful!
Good for you! You and I are at the same stage of life. I am fifty and have homeschooled my three children for the past 16 years. My youngest is graduating in May and I'm not sure what I want to do with myself now. I am excited about the possiblities though!
Sherry @ A Happy Valentine
Congratulations! I went back this year, too! I am finding I like it better than I did in my 20's! Best of Luck to you!!
Wendy
Cindy,
You really don't need the degree. You have the natural talent & with your following on your blog & the other exposure you've received, I think all you need to do is put yourself out there as a decorator. I know people who have their ASID degrees & they're unemployed. Just give it a try and see what happens. You have the talent & the 'eye' that is needed. Go for it!
Congratulations Cindy! I'm sure you will make huge a success of it and will be a very busy lady.
I think you will be absolutely great at it. You already have talent, skill, and a good eye.
Congratulations Cindy! I am so happy for you. I know you will be a success in the interior design field.
~ Tracy
Cindy~ I think you could challenge all the courses and graduate within the week! You have a degree already....
Best of luck.. I know.. I am going back too...but not for something as fun!
Cat
Yes, Cindy! Wonderful idea. We could all use help in making the world a more beautiful place! Of which you are already an expert!;)
Good for you Cindy!!!! I am excited for you! You will love going back to school as an adult. You will be way ahead of the class because of your life experience. Have you decided which school you are going to?
I know you are in northern CA, so there must be something good up there. After graduating with a BA in Business, I went to FIDM (for Fashion Design). After having kids I went to OCC in Costa Mesa. They have a fabulous Regional Interior Design Program. I really enjoyed going back to school and I'm sure you will to because you are going for something you love.
Awesome news!!! Great Idea on all accounts!!! Wow, you can really go all different directions with this once you are done!!! And, with your skills, you'd have 'em knocking down your door!
That's wonderful......best of luck to you. It's exciting to try a new career!
Congrats! I went back to college when my kids were grown! Loved every minute!
Best wishes, Jennifer aka Gigi
Good for you! You could probably teach the class though.
I wish you all the best,
Carolyn
Cindy,
You were born with an amazing talent to create. Your vision and creative juices are spot-on.
You're just going to tie it all together with some formal training.
I know you will be a success, and I couldn't be happier for you!
Marilyn (in Dallas)
That is AWESOME! And you are young! I have a friend that put her kid thru college and then start from step one and became a lawyer well into her 50's. I am so proud of her. You and your family will be the better for it. Congrats!
Congrats Cindy! You are a natural!
marcia
Congratulations Cindy! I think it is wonderful that you can follow your passion! And you are right!! We always need a backup plan of action!! Yay for YOU!
What a wonderful plan. And a back up plan at our age (50 for me this year) is a good thing. Best wishes in this new adventure.
Wonderful plan, Cindy, and it is obvious that you will be the best!!
God bless you!
Hugs, Carolyn ~ Cottage Sunshine
Excellent decision, Cindy. I wish you all the best. I have absolute faith that you are going to do extremely well.
Cindy you are a perfect example for women to never stop dreaming and doing!!! Congratulations, you will be in big demand!!
Good for you! I'm so excited for you...doing what your heart desires is always a good thing!
Sharlotte
Congratulations!! That is definitely something I have considered doing when my baby is in school...or at least out of school. I know you will do great...you definitely have a natural knack for design!!!
Cindy- You can probably teach those classes! Congrats! (Fifty is the new 40- that is what I always say! I also tell people I am 40-10!)
~Nana~
Good for you Cindy!
It's never too late to pursue your dream. You are already talented in the design area. I'm sure you will have no problem studying something you love so much.
What an inspiration you are!
Blessings,
Debbie
Cindy that is such a wonderful idea!! I am so glad you decided to go back to school and especially in a field you love. It is so obvious you have a natural talent for interior design!! I suspect you will be a great success in that field.
It is scary when you work for corporations today....you just never know what might happen!!
That is very exciting Cindy! I think you should follow your dream! Congrates on makig such a wonderful decision! We are all fans and will support you on your journey to become a Interior Designer! You already are but then you will have the degree!
Hugs,
Maryjane

You go girl!!! I went back to school in my mid-40's....best thing I ever did.
Good luck - you will be a fantastic interior designer. Looking forward to your first design book:)
Hi Cindy,
Good for you, you won't regret it! SJ State and West Valley have great programs, FYI! ( I'm an alumni!). You'll be surprised how quickly the time goes, and how much you will learn about yourself taking those classes. I was older than my classmates - but just in my late 20's ( a l o o o ng time ago!. I think having more maturity makes the whole experience much more fulfilling. The best of luck to you!
We'll all be rooting for you.
XO

Omigosh Cindy, that is WONDERFUL!!! You will make a terrific interior designer, and you already have a great following here -- lots of potential clients! Best of luck!!!
Fantastic Cindy! I am so excited for you!
BTW 50 is the new 25! And I couldn't feel better!

Congrats for education. My daughter is graduating with a minor in ID. She has a great eye for it. You will do great.
Congratulations!!!! Good for you. Follow your dream. My hubby returned to school in Feb. after 36 years at the same job. He is loving it at 56. He amazes me everyday, but really is enjoying it.
Debby
Hi Cindy... That is so great good for you... enjoy and have fun which I know you will.. you are already a wonderful decorator... have a great week.
Hugs;
Alaura
Congrats!!! :) I think you will do great!! I have a degree from TCU in Interior Design and I will say it is NOT a safe field to be in...I have been laid off 2 times over the past 2 years due to the economy. It seems to be the first area people cut back on. :( Just wanted to give you a heads up...wish I had gotten a Minor in Education but I have been out for 10 years and there is no way I am going to go back right now.
But is is a FUN field to be in!!! :)
Cindy, I'm happy for you! I should have done the same at 18, but instead I became a teacher. I don't regret my career in education, but still wish I'd followed my dream. I'm now retired and in my 60s so going back to school isn't in my plans. I'll just continue to have fun with my own home. :-)
Hi Cindy, Congratulations...but I already think of you as an Interior Designer...just look at your house...gorgeous! Good luck following your dreams...you are so talented!
Beth
Wow Cindy, that's big news! Good for you! You will be awesome!
xo
LeAnn
Congrats Cindy! superb decision! and Am so excited for you!.. best of luck!
That's wonderful news! I have both bachelor's and master's degrees and have never regretted it a moment...... Best of luck!
Ahh Cindy. We have a lot in common. I have three children and too am edging near 50. I took a couple of evening classes when my first was born but then abandoned that idea. It's interesting where life leads us.
The best of luck! Eventhough your daughter is now 18, it's still not going to be easy working full time and going to school. Good luck and hand in there.

Congrats Cindy! You are going to love it. I was attending my self but have to cut it short due to moving to another state...maybe when the little one gets older...so happy for you!
(BTW- I have some rendering and Design books...if you need them I'll be happy to send them to you)
Alain0207@msn.com
Congrats on your decision! I worked many years as an Interior Designer and know you will be great and love every minute of it! There are many days you will say to yourself "I get paid to do this!". Nothing like drawing and shopping for a living!!! Congrats!
Machelle
I'm rooting for you Cindy and cheering you on. Just know you have MANY cheerleaders! You'll be an awesome interior designer. My daughter Chloe went to school to be an interior designer and loved it so much. She was out of state but some of the projects like designing a green room from sustainable products in my favorite of hers.
You already have a "following". I know I would hire you!
So happy for you and wishing you tons of fun on your journey to your degree.
Cindy, WOOHOO!!! I am so excited. You are a natural. You GO, girl. xoxo Lidy
Congratulations, Cindy! How wonderful! I'm sure you are a bit nervous but I truly believe you are going to take to this like a duck to water. I've said this before and I'll say it again...oh how I wish we didn't live on opposite sides of the country because I'd love to hire you...with or without a degree!
Good for you. You have the courage to do what I have only dreamed of.
Best wishes to you.
Melissa
Good for you!
That is awesome! You will be a natural! It's never too late to do what you love!
Good for you - I'm proud of you for making this decision! You will be a great decorator. If you want to practice, come on up and try my house!
I wanted to go back to school after my kids were on their own and I didn't do it. My brother-in-law, who is an accountant, overheard me telling family that I really wanted to go back to school. His words were 'At your age you'll never earn enough to make it pay back the cost of your education!' Wish I'd stuck out my tongue at him and done it anyway! Why do some people always have to be so practical? Can't wait to hear what you're learning. Keep us updated about how you're doing.
~Adrienne~
Congratulations on your decision to take on this new adventure! And follow your dream! You deserve it, especially after years of loving and serving your kids well.
That is so great Cindy, I'm inspired by your determination. It's not easy to work full-time and go to school. I have a few more years before my youngest goes off to college, and then I think I should go back to school myself, or at least try to pursue my dreams. You definitely have a knack for decorating, best of luck!
As a new blogger and follower of your blog, I wanted to wish you the best with your new path in life. Maybe I will do the same as I am also in the similar situation as you. Please do share some details about class when you have the time. Good for you to go for your dream!
This is wonderful. It's what I should have done when I was 18 also. Maybe I'll get the chance someday, maybe not. But I'm very happy for you... even though I think you are talented enough to do it with sans schooling.
Congrats! That is so wonderful. I have thought about returning to school many times, too, but my little one is just five. In a few more years, I am definitely going to start.
Good for you! You will be wonderful at it.
so happy for you Cindy! You will be great at it! take it from someone who had to start over after losing a my job, I'm sooooo glad I have my little business and Junkee! You Go Girl!
The Other Tracey
Congrats on the big decision Cindy! You'll be great at it!
Tracey
CONGRATULATIONS! I'm a secret follower! I'm sooooooo happy for you!!!! Love you and the blog!!! XOXOX
Congratulations, Cindy! It's so nice to hear that you finally can do that. Good luck!
Congratulations, you will be a natural. What I could really see you doing though, is working for a magazine doing layouts like the ones you have been featured in yourself. You have a great eye for telling a story with pictures. I loved going back to schiool as an adult. It is a whole different experience when your studying something you love and because you want to, not have to. Enjoy every minute of it. Rhianna
Couldn't agree more about the back up plan. You go girl, what a perfect fit for you!
A little late in posting this *been in finals at school myself* I wanted to tell you that I went to school to be an Interior Designer and am NOW in my late 30's going back WITH a family to complete that into a 4 year degree. I DO hold a degree already, however most of it is honorary and the credits are non-transferable.
I LOOOOVE what I do and highly suggest you go for it! It will also challenge you with expanding your views. Be prepared to sketch, draft and draw perspective drawings as well as PAINT them!
Good luck! now's a great time too with all the Grants out there. You may qualify for one as you are a single parent!!
xoxo Molly
I'm going to set up my own, personal project since you don't see any decent jobs these days.
Could any one provide any hints or online resources about how to find government grant money to set up my personal business? I have been previously looking over the internet but every single website asks for money and I have been previously told by the unemployment office to avoid the websites that request money for grant related information as they are scammers. I'd be truly thankful for any guidance.
