After Christmas Shopping!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!  I planned to post yesterday to wish everyone a Merry Christmas but I was so exhausted so I took it really easy and even took an afternoon nap which is something I never do!  This morning I felt so much better and hit the road early to shop!  First I drove over the hill to the Santa Cruz Flea Market and then on my way back I stopped by Vintage & Vogue to buy some 1/2 price Christmas things.  I bought the 3 ornaments and the glittered deer above, all for $20 .

And....(drumroll) this is what I bought at the flea market! A gorgeous old hand-carved mirror for $30! It's missing some of the mirrors and I'm hoping it's not going to be too expensive to replace those.  I'm going to paint it antique-white (of course) and hang it above my sofa, maybe with some plates hanging above it. (I have it sitting on top of the sofa in the photo)  I'm also considering painting it and putting fabric where the mirror should be and using it for a headboard in Lauren's room.  The vendor had another one which was larger than this for $35 and she said I could have both for $50 but that large one would never have fit in my car! I barely got this one in!
Here's a close up of the top...
Update:  I put it on top of Lauren's full-size bed and it's too long for a headboard so then I put it on my Queen-size bed and it's too long for that also. It would probably fit a King-size bed which we don't have!  I guess it will be going over the sofa!

  5. Cindy, Love your new ornaments and the mirror is the best find! I have one that is similar over my couch. Someone I knew was actually going to throw it away. It was shiny gold and I painted it antique white and antiqued it. I get so many complements on that mirror. I can't wait to see it in place! I know you'll show us! Hope you had a great Christmas.

  6. You really hit the jackpot with this great find. I believe you'll treasure it forever.

QUESTION: I'm trying to find the photos of your friends' home. It was a while back.... on your blog....
    Thanks

  7. Cindy, the mirror/frame is beautiful! I was thinking maybe you could replace the mirrors with plain glass and spray paint the back side of the glass silver and black, splotchy like, to look like an aged mirror. Or you could use mirror squares (again, "aged" from the back side) and fit them together. Then use a brass tack or upholstery tack at each spot where the mirror squares meet. Have you seen that look?

  8. Martha...I think you might be talking about Debbie's home? Those are from Oct 2007 and Nov 2007. If you look in my archives you should be able to find those posts. She was also featured in a couple issues of Romantic Country Magazine.

  26. Hi Cindy,

If you find the mirrors are too pricey to replace, you could have an artist come in and paint some kind of still life on the back of the mirror. You can find really good (and cheap) artists at your local high school. Just check with the art teacher and ask for her most talented student. I envision some kind of teapot (blue and white, of course) with roses and a cup and saucer. That would be for the center panel - perhaps it wouldn't be too costly to replace the other side mirror. Or you could create a vignette and have her (or him) paint that on the panel. Just some ideas. I absolutely LOVE this find!!!

    Blessings,
    Trish

  30. That is absolutely gorgeous!!! Can't wait to see it all done... I had a large frame I wanted to put a mirror in, so I just found a mirror at a garage sale for $2(could be a thrift store...) and took it to a glass shop so they could cut it... It only cost me $6 for the cut!

  32. I am with Sue, strap that sucker to the car one way or another! It is like the guys do when they hunt, putting the deer or elk head on the front bumper. Well we have to do the same when we "hunt" and find treasures, which looks like you are GREAT! at. Enjoy, I look forward to seeing what you do with it, I love the above the sofa idea.
Wish I could even get out to after Christmas shop. I did do a few things on line, some good deals to be had there too.

  35. Cindy, This is going to be beautiful when you get finished with it. It would look gorgeous with blue and white toile padded fabric where the side mirrors go and put a mirror in the middle. Mirrors make rooms look so much larger. It will look beautiful over your sofa. I bought a large mirror frame at an auction a couple of years ago and still haven't done anything with it. It is a beautiful frame and very large. I primed it white and thats as far as I got. I know it will be expensive to replace the mirror...I guess that is why I keep putting it off. Maybe when I see yours finished, I will get motivated. I can't wait to see yours finished! I love your ornaments too. Very pretty.
    Hugs,
    Lee Laurie

  37. Cindy,
Just beautiful! See if you can find a mirror at a thrift store or Wal Marts. Then mark the back of the mirror, by placing it against the back of furnture and using thin black marker. I did this and glass company only charged me $5.00 to cut. I did not have as many curves s yours, but having the mirror and tracing it for them will save you Money : )

  38. ....OH, AND WHILE IT'S OVER YOUR BUBBLE BATH, CANDLES GLOWING WOULD REALLY BE ROMANTIC!

  48. Cindy, You really need to start carring an old blanket and straps for your car. You could have bought the 50$ mirror, worked your magic on it and sold it for tons more! I love this mirror and it should not be expenive to fix. Maybe you could find an older aged mirror and have it cut to fit. It might look funny if you have a brand spanking new mirro on just one part of it.
I can't wait to see what your solution is....it's a beautiful mirror, perfect for your home!

I love the idea of using the cloth to replace the side mirrors.

Can't wait to see how it will look. Get busy, lady!

You need to open an etsy store or do ebay.

  52. Cindy, Absolutely love the mirror frame and wish I had the one for the king sized bed. I used to live in Los Gatos (6 1/2 yrs ago) and went to Ken's Mirror and Glass over by the SJ Fair Grounds for mirror as it was so much cheaper than LG. I don't know if it is still there as I have been living in SAmerica for the past 5 years. Just an idea for you. ADS

You're so lucky in the States to have Flea Markets like that.

That mirror would probably be $150.00+ at an antique store up here in Canada.

Can't wait to see it painted !

  78. Happy New Year Cindy!
Finally getting to catch up with you since the holidays...whew!

WOW... what pretties you have shared. What a bummer this mirror was too large for a bed... a tufted headboard was my first impression! Mine was a king too, I acutally cut parts off and it still hangs over a tad, but I just throw more pillows on to hide it, lol!

Your year in review was great. I wish I had the time to visit everyone, but I have seen many.

OH! And I finally got to watch you one HGTV! My mom had taped it for me. SO cool for you, it was neat to hear your vioce. You didn't sound like I expected tho... which I don't even know what that would be, ha! You talk more like I do, and I expected a higher voice for some reason.

    The tassels are great..
and I LOVE those faux chocolate bunnies!!! Gotta get me some!

Thanks for sharing everything with us, and for sending warm weather thoughts... it was -2 here this morning and then it warmed up to a big fat 0, lol!
