Thrift Store Finds!

I've been hitting A LOT of thrift stores lately looking for more silver trays to turn into chalk boards to sell but unfortunately I'm not finding trays but I am finding some other nice things for myself! Here I am...trying to make money and I end up spending money! Oh well!
I found this silver champagne bucket for $9.99. It was very tarnished but nothing a little Wrights Silver Cream couldn't handle. I already had a silver champagne bucket but it was very cheap-looking and plain so it's nice to upgrade to a nicer one with more ornate handles.
After I found the bucket I kept picturing it loaded with large shells but I didn't have enough big ones to make it look nice! I kept thinking how much I wanted a big conch shell...well you will never believe it, I walked into a thrift store on Monday and found this huge beautiful shell for $11.00!!! It's over 7" long! If that wasn't the law of attraction at work I don't know what is. (if you haven't read the book The Secret, you should...it works!)
So here it is all full of shells! For a different look I filled it with dried hydrangeas...
Of course I could always use it for what it was intended...
I also found this Pfaltzgraff sugar and creamer set. The sugar bowl was $1.50 and the creamer $1.00. I couldn't pass them up for that price! I used to have these many years ago, this my very first dish pattern when I was just 18 years old!
9/11/2001.....We will never forget!

  2. Great finds! Even here in FL, that shell would cost way more than $11.00! Gotta tell you...you have no idea how much I loved clicking on your blog today and seeing SHELLS! I feel like I'm the only one in Blogland who isn't showing fall decor. My pastel colors, pink roses, floral prints, and the couple beachy rooms I have in my home make it so hard to decorate for fall. It's really bumming me out that I have no seasonal decor to share. I know you have said in the past you are somewhat in the same boat with your color scheme so I guess I'm in great company. :)

  5. What a great find Cindy! Really beautiful... I have been using Tarnex on the silver and have never been totally happy with the results... but looking at your silver bucket and how badly it was tarnished I think I will switch to Wrights!
Yes, I have read the secret and its fantastic!

  6. I love silver of all sorts, especially champaign buckets. They remind me of trophies (which are always so expensive!) I've been able to find 2 very lovely ones in thrift stores as well. I think most people hate polishing them. Great find!

  11. Cindy, Love your silver bucket it is fab-o with the shells!!! I just found 2 magnificent silver buckets and they are tarnished, but I had to buy the price was right! So I'm going to use the creme you suggest to clean my up. I will post them on my blog this weekend and maybe you can give me some ideas on how to use them. I think they are going to be fabulous this holiday season for tabletop decor. Your blog is always inspiring. Thanks Rhonda

Oh Cindy, you have such good
luck thrifting. I need to go
    shopping with you because you
    always find such pretty things.

I love the silver bucket. It
    looks so pretty all "shined"
up! Love the shell, too. I
love shells but don't have any
because I'm afraid one of our
pets will decide to chew on
    them.....not a good thing! Of
    course, in middle Tennessee we
don't have THAT many shells! LOL

    You always make everything look
    so pretty!

    Have a great weekend!

  16. Cindy,

Did you sneak into my garage and take my silver bucket? I've been looking high and low for mine w/o success ;) Cindy, I love your creativity with the shells...small and big. I would have never thought to put them in a bucket like that. Thanks for sharing. Another idea in my inspiration files.

    Toodles.

  18. Cindy love the conch shell. We went to Grand Cayman a few years ago and My hubby actually dived down far enough to get one (live) for me. It is quite an ugly creature that lives in there, but we cleaned it all up and it is a beautiful shell. :)

  19. The silver champagne bucket is beautiful. It was worth the silver polish. I especially liked it with the hydrangeas.
Also love your Carmel pictures. Lucky you that you can visit there often. I've been there twice but have to travel clear across the country to get there. My favorite place in the U.S.

The Secret is so inspiring ~ I'm still trying to get more consistent at it, but it sure is amazing how fast it works at times.

  28. You are sooooo lucky, I wish I could find some of this stuff. I have read The Secret too & so has my daughters. When we are feeling a bit down and out we remind each other of the book and boost each other back into the land of the living. Just this morning I was complaining about my job and saying how unstable I feel there at the moment & she reminded me to be careful of my thoughts & start to think positively etc.Have a great weekend, I know I will
    Cheers

  29. Wow Cindy, the bucket turned out just beautiful. I used to have several sets like your creamer and sugar and sold it years ago at a garage sale. Makes me sick now.

  30. Dear Cindy, Thank you first of all, for acknowledging 9/11/01. It's amazing how many people have put it so far out of their memories, the mention of the date doesn't even trigger any sort of response. Out of 8 newspapers we sell at our market, only 2 felt it was noteworthy to give creedence to the memory of 9/11... or some sort of mention of what horrible things happened 8 years ago. I still cannot believe it. I know that life goes on... but, really, without remembering the past, we are destined to repeat it. I have heard that so many times.

Thanks for Carmel. Beautiful. Some of those homes made my heart go pitter-patter. And, might I say, I could never, never, ever just "drive by" a beach. However, that is because I don't live anywhere's near the beach. I remember as a young girl going to the beaches in New Hampshire, Maine, or New Jersey, and I could always tell when we were getting close... the land would get flat, and the air would take on this certain and specific scent... and no matter where we were staying, we would always just pull over somewhere, we'd get out of the car and just go stick our toes/legs in the water. We couldn't wait! You are so fortunate!

I really like your champange chiller, and I was just wondering if there is anything on the bottom that let you know for sure that you could get it clean? I've seen some pretty pieces in thrift stores too, but I'm not sure I can get it clean. There's silver, there's silverplate, and then what? And if there's no mark.... how do you decide?

Hugs, and thanks again for another wonderful "staycataion" from PA to CA! Penny Sue

  34. Cindy,

The bucket is fabulous, and I love how you so creatively change its appearance with the addition of different decorative items! I've said it before, I'll say it again...your vision is impeccable!!

My fav. has got to be the hydrangeas. Love that flower and it looks stunning in the silver bucket.

I'm still drooling over your pictures of Carmel. I've always wanted to tour the area, and your pictures are the next best thing.

  36. Such a beautiful bicket, and the shells are perfect in it! I know some people love the look of tarnished silver, but I love it polished up too. In this case I think it is so much prettier shiny:>)

  37. I still use those very same Pfaltzgraff dishes. They are wonderful. They can be dressed up with a simple charger or very casual/clean looking set by themselves :-)

I picked up a champagne bucket with a stand recently for $2-- It just never got shiny enough for me, so its been stuck in with my "pirate props" for our yearly pirate party!
