My company had a re-org today and unfortunately my job was eliminated.
It's a very scary place to be with the economy the way it is. I found this job almost 10 years ago after being laid off during the dot-com bust in 2001. I'm hoping I have the same good luck finding a job this time!
If anyone in Silicon Valley (San Francisco Bay Area) knows of an open Executive Assistant or Administrative Assistant job please let me know. I have a lot of experience supporting Directors and VPs in high tech and medical device companies.
I'll be okay financially until at least late Spring of 2012 but the sooner I find a job the better!
So sorry! That happened to my mom recently too... She was lucky enough to find another job right away so hope you will too! good luck to you!
ReplyDeletesorry to hear that, I'm sure you will find a better job soon!

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear that. My advice would be to network as much as you can right now. You never know who knows who and what opportunities are out there. ReplyDeleteBut,... you do have lots of skills, and you're charming, and innovative, i bet you'll find a great job in no time at all. My thoughts are with you...
Cindy

ReplyDeleteHugs,

I am so sorry to hear this Cindy. Wishing you lots of luck on the job search.
ReplyDeleteCindy,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear that you must find a new job. I am a firm believer in "when one door closes another one opens" YOU are very talented and will be drawn to a new position very soon-look at it like it is an adventure you are about to embark on and let the journey begin! I like change but some people are afraid of change.
We have been in our home for 16 years and sometimes I would like to sell and move to a smaller home, with less work to do. More time to enjoy ourselves and just take time to be and not worry!
Maybe the loss of this job will
bring more opportunities into your life! Good luck to you!
I'm so sorry. I hope something so much better opens for you!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear that. I hope really great things come your way :)
ReplyDeleteHi Cindy,

ReplyDeleteOh, sweetie...I'm so sorry to hear that. I can totally empathize with you after losing two jobs w/in a 4 year period....all because of "company downsizing due to the economy". It totally stinks, I know. But you will find something when the time is right! Keep your chin up and try to enjoy the extra time at home for now. ♥

So sorry to hear this Cindy. Praying that you find a job soon. You never know, you may end up with something that you like more and with a higher salary. Aim high!
ReplyDeleteBefore I say one thing, I saw that little "you might also like" at the bottom of this post and it was about your son, Vince; must have missed it from before. What a handsome, high-achieving young man. These are the blessings!
ReplyDeleteSometimes the loss of a job doesn't seem like a blessing, but it can lead to another really right thing, if you don't have a nervous breakdown in between being out of work and getting to the new work.
I was in your line of work for 25 years. Of about 7 jobs in that time, my job was eliminated in 3. On my very last job, I realized I was in jeopardy when a meeting was called with the region office to which I was not invited; as soon as everybody went to lunch, I thumbed thru my "boss's" notepad and, sure enough, my position was being eliminated across the region's offices. It was suggested we "justify" my position, so I wrote up a 10-page description of my duties and, to be really safe, took on about 50% more work from other managers, didn't submit my overtime hours...and continued working 12-hr days. I made myself so sick over it, one day I thought "what would be the worst thing that would happen if I lose this job; how can I prepare myself for the scare and shock of termination, and what will I do NOW?" Hmmm...it started looking good, like maybe it wasn't such a bad thing; I was so miserable anyway. I wound up doing them a favor and submitted my resignation, without having anything else in my pocket. It was so liberating. I'm not saying I didn't miss the money, but I landed on my feet and, you know what Cindy, you will as well.
This just makes me so mad, though, that this happened to you right when it seems like everything else in your life is going so well. It's the cycle thing; we don't seem sometimes to get to rest too easy before, WHAM, something "character-building" has to happen.
If you're okay for a few months financially, why not try your best to enjoy this favorite time of year, Thanksgiving thru Christmas; try to look at it as a gift, enjoying the things you already have on hand to decorate. You can start the new year in earnest for the job seeking. Easier said than done, I know, but it's my unsolicited advice. Will be thinking of you; chin up, Cindy! Your sunny personality will get you thru anything!
Ouch! What a bad day! Best of luck in finding something even better!
ReplyDeleteKaree
You know, this just happened to my sister-in-law and she's been with the same firm for 25 years. They said she wasn't bringing in enough new business (insurance sales). She was just a couple of years from "normal" retirement although, with the economy, was going to extend it to age 67 or so. Her husband was let go in his fifties, too, just like her. He went on to get a job he liked better, and got in a good ten years before retiring this year; I know she will, too. In "the old days," though, it seems like a lot of experience and years on the job meant something; was protective. Not so anymore, obviously, sadly. Reinvention can be really uplifting, though. I agree with other bloggers here, in terms of you personally. Look at how you've embraced new things in the last couple of years, Cindy; you haven't gotten stagnant at all! This is just another thing to turn into something good for yourself, I'm sure of it!
ReplyDeleteCindy I am so sorry to hear this. Things always work out and I'm certain something just wonderful will come along for you! Take Care
ReplyDeleteI AM SO SORRY !ABOUT YOR JOB CINDY.GOD IS GOOD AN A NEW JOB WILL BE THERE FOR YOU,BLESSINGS TO YOU DEAR CINDY...THINKING OF YOU !!!!.YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS SINCERELY SANDRA...
ReplyDeleteMy husband is currently working three jobs to support us (and he's no spring chicken); came in late tonight and I told him about your job loss, as I'd just left your site. He shook his head solemnly and said, "it's happening all over the country." He's on pins and needles about his primary job because he's a state employee via the university system; I'm talking about "broke" California. He's worried he could lose his job at any time. Isn't it a shame? There's such a feeling of uncertainty "out there." People just want to work hard at a good job and feel secure. I think what's really "telling" is how you can be talking to someone, and everybody knows somebody who is having job issues. Even with this post, a few bloggers have indicated the same. I know it's not a club you want to belong to, Cindy, but hope and prayer are powerful things...and you have good, recent job skills! And you're very hirable because you're a cutie patootie.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear this Cindy!! We went though a layoff a few years back, but my husband's career really took off afterwards. It was really a matter of timing. Good luck in finding a new one, and may it be even better!
ReplyDeleteCindy, I'm so sorry, it's not a nice place to be. I am married to a Scotsman, and he always has the saying "Whats for you will not go past you". We always say thet when something like this happens and he's always right. He says there must be something better around the corner. You wait and see,you will have something better very soon xxxx
ReplyDeleteCindy! What a wonderful opportunity!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is your new CV. Send it out to magazines, television stations, newspapers etc.
You obviously love what you do in design - turn that 'hobby' into a job...
A whole faaabulous new world is opening up for you. Grab it with both hands.
Sorry to read about your job Cindy. Here's hoping a new opportunity turns up very soon.
ReplyDeleteGod luck. I know is very difficult these days... here in Greece we are in the same condition.
ReplyDeleteBut smile, everyday is a good day, and we hope for the best ! Health is the most serious thing!

Cindy... I know it's scary! I was laid off 2-times in 3-years in the late 1990's... the last time.. I decided it was time for a career change (apparently God was sending me a message)... I followed my heart and found something that I love to do and... make pretty good $$'s too. You are so gifted and talented in other areas (other that admin)... I hope you'll follow your heart... I bet there are bigger and better things awaiting you out there...
ReplyDeleteblessings. Dixie
Cindy, you know I was laid off at Christmas in 2008, so I know exactly how you are feeling. It's so much more scary going through a lay-off when you are single!!
ReplyDeleteThings have worked out for me and I have no doubt they will for you too!!!
I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers up here in the Pacific Northwest, and I'll be looking forward to what your next adventure will be and where this new challenge takes you. (Remember, THAT'S how I ended up here!)

been there done that back 2002
I drew unemployment till that ran out then was really desperate and got hired as a part time kelly like girl.
Now I work 3 days a week
and 2 hours on Mondays
I wish you good luck with your new job
Hi Cindy - this is my first visit to your blog and I was thrilled to see the huge flood of support and encouragement for you at this challenging time. I am a "retired" Personal/Executive Assistant and throughout my 47 years in the workforce found that on a couple of occasions when I was a casualty of similar corporate decisions, an even better opportunity was never far away. During the waiting process I engaged in contract/temp work and at least 2 of those led to long-term employment (1 for 8 years and the other for 5 years). Be encouraged - sometimes God allows these temporary hiccups in our lives to remind us to rely on His provision for our circumstances, and He never disappoints!
ReplyDeleteIt truly is a sad time, Cindy. Thank goodness you have the financial means to sustain you, the friends to encourage you, and the prayers to comfort you. Our family company closed four years ago after being in business for 36 years. We continue to struggle but find strength in faith and "in house" encouragement. I will keep you in my thoughts & prayers.
ReplyDeleteGod doesn't close one door without opening another! You will certainly find something and it may be even better than what you had!
ReplyDeleteCindy, visualizing and affirming a new and exciting job for you, all the way from India. Keep writing on your blog. Isn't it wonderful that you have so many readers to support you!

ReplyDeleteAlthough it can be easier said then done, try to keep you glass half full. My husband and I both lost jobs in the last 6 months but things are looking up. The beginning shock is scary but then channel that energy into finding something new. Sometimes these things can be a blessing in disguise. Sorry I have no leads, I live in San Diego. I know you'll find something!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry, Cindy. Am thinking of you. Any employer would be lucky to have you so keep your chin up! Love, Esther Sunday

ReplyDeleteso sorry to read this! i'm glad it sounds like you have some money saved to get you through this time.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! I am writing to you from Italy and I know exactly how you feel...I am still a lucky one but I spent 6 years before finding my actual job!
ReplyDeleteCiao Alessandra
Cindy, I just read this as I had not had a chance to visit the blog for a while. I'm so sorry to hear this. I only know too well how it must feel, as the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago when I lost my job. It was a shock and no one understands how it feels unless they've been through it themselves. But I've seen a lot of admin positions on job sites like Monster and with your experience, I'm sure you will find something soon. Same thing also happened to a couple of my friends and they both found jobs within a few weeks. So keep positive and keep believing that this will actually steer you toward something even better! Best of luck in your search!
