forty-eight

Today I'm 48 which seems so weird to me...I feel more like 38. Where has the time gone?

Last weekend Lauren said we should get our favorite cake for my birthday. Our favorite cake is Burnt Almond Cake from Dick's Bakery in San Jose. This cake is their specialty and it is so good! Ever since Lauren mentioned that cake I couldn't stop thinking about it (I blame it on dieting) so even though my birthday is today I went and bought the cake on my way home from work yesterday and we had it last night! I could barely taste it because I have a horrible cold! Bummer!

My friends at work were laughing at me for ordering my own birthday cake but when you're single you have to do things like this for yourself! I not only do it for me but for Lauren. I think it teaches her that you have to not only think about others but yourself as well. I think that's a valuable lesson for anyone! Don't you?

Yes, I'm still on my diet even though I'm eating Birthday cake...I'm down 13 lbs so far.

  1. Happy Birthday! Cindy. Hope your year is FABULOUS!
Congratulations on your weight loss. That takes will power. You've shown that in lots of other places in your life, too. It isn't easy to work, raise a family and do all the things you do.
Continued happiness in the coming year!

I wish for you that house on Martha's Vineyard....and all the funds necessary to decorate it in the style you have shared with us of your lovely apartment. 5. Happy Birthday Cindy! I'm proud of you for getting the cake. I am the mom of sons. Sometimes I do things for myself because I hope to show them something that girls might like. They are so clueless you know.

Way to go on the weight loss. It's hard but so worth it.

    Darn...now I'm hungry!

  22. Happy Birthday Cindy. The cake does look GOOD! To bad the bakery is a little to far..or should I say "good thing'. LOL! I want my baby weight to go AWAY. Having 5 kids back to back isn't very good for the waist line. I think what you said about your daughter is true. Teaching her that taking care of yourself, being happy and having fun just yourself can happen. That you two ARE A FAMILY. So you do family thingies together. Happy Birthday again! Wendy

  23. Happy Birthday, Cindy. Yeah, I'm a 1960 baby also. I agree with you ~~ I don't know where the time has gone. You did the right thing by purchasing your own birthday cake. You are showing your daughter a valuable lesson ~~ if you want it, go for it ~~ don't depend on someone else in order to get it. Enjoy your day and remember it's ok to have a slice of the cake ~~ just don't eat the whole thing!! Good luck! Joanne

  25. Happy Birthday! My advice to any dieter, everything in moderation. It's when we deny ourselves of absolutely everything "fattening" or "not diet friendly", we lose focus. It becomes about the food.. and not the pleasure the food can bring to you. 13 lbs is a great accomplishment! You're doing fine.

Hey, could you check out my post on my blog page. If you don't know how to do what I want to do, maybe you know someone who can.

By the way, over the past few weeks that I've been enjoying your site, I must complement you on your photography. It's very well done. You have a good eye for taking photos. Your photos are simply amazing.

  48. Happy Birthday again! 1960 must have been a very good year because although I'm 7 years older, I know 4 or 5 really special people who were born in 1960.

Believe me, being married or having a significant other is no guarantee that you won't ever have to buy your own birthday cake. There have been several times I've bought my own! At least you are assured of getting exactly the kind of cake you want that way! :)

I remember Dick's Bakery! (used to live in San Jose and still have multitudes of relatives there) Haven't heard the name for years. I think it's because my uncles went into the bakery business. We, of course, then had to be loyal! LOL

  69. Happy Birthday, Cindy! I think you're teaching your daughter a wonderful thing. I don't care about gift giving from friends and relatives. I gift myself. I do think it is vitally important to be good to yourself. Not in a materialistic way. Just to teach women that we deserve to be nice to ourselves. Good luck on your diet. Every time I have gone on a diet, I end up gaining it back. I think it is likely a psychological thing with me. So I let myself have what I want, and I eat less that way because I don't feel I've slighted myself. The ultimate gift is food!

  118. Happy Birthday!

Well, I've been married 34 years and I still have to buy my own cake if I want one (since my daughter married and lives in New England).

You are right, it is a good lesson to buy a birthday cake. Life is never perfect so one has to work around those imperfections to make it lovely.

  126. Happy Birthday! I'm soooo jealous of the cake! It's my favorite, but no one makes it up here. When I lived in San Jose, I always asked my mom to get me one for my birthdays.

  129. Happy Birthday to YOU! And congrats on your weight loss, I know how hard it is to do (I need to lose quite a few myself)!

  130. Happy Birthday to you! Good for you for ordering the cake. I recently turned 40, my husband was out of the country so I threw myself a party. It was perfect! Everything I wanted. My 19 year old daughter also learned that if you want something it's ok to give it to yourself! Great parenting kudo's to you Cindy.

  133. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY! I hit 50 this year and I didn't feel 50 either. However, I will say, change is taking place a little faster than previously in my life. I don't like that much.

I do have an 8-year old who keeps me young. So far, no one as asked me if he is my grandchild.

    Have an incredible year!

  138. Cindy, Happy BELATED birthday! I've been gone to Memphis and Atlanta to visit kids and grandkids, so forgive my lateness.

Forty-eight sounds YOUNG to me. I will be having a birthday in November and it is MUCH higher than your young 48. Enjoy every moment and year of your life.
