Backyard Blooms

This is now my favorite rose! It's a climbing rose called "Eden". I just planted it this year after seeing some gorgeous photos of this rose. It's so old-fashioned and romantic! It's scent is very light. As you can see in the photo below, it's still very small. I can hardly wait until it starts climbing the arbor. My hydrangeas are starting to bloom too!
This one below is called "Endless Summer" and is supposed to continue to bloom throughout summer. Usually hydrangeas only bloom once and when the flowers die back that's it until the next year.
My gardenia's are blooming and filling my patio with a beautiful fragrance. Although today all I can smell is smoke. There is a huge wild fire that started yesterday on the mountain close to my home. The wind shifted during the night and I woke up this morning to the smell of smoke! It's so smokey that the sun is not even shining through it. Once I got to work I couldn't believe the difference. The sun is out and you can barely smell it. What a difference 13 miles makes! I feel bad for Lauren, she has asthma and the smoke was really heavy at her school.
These delphiniums were doing great until the wind whipped up yesterday (which also was horrible for the wild fire) and broke one of the two stalks I had.

Here is the view of the delphinium from inside my apartment. you can see the delphinium stalks on each side of the plaque on the fence.

And here is my tomato plant. I took this photo last weekend and I can't believe how much it has grown since then. Mmmm....I can just taste those tomato sandwiches!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

  1. I couldn't believe how quickly that fire grew! Last weekend we had several, close by...we were on edge. I hear that some blessed fog moved in overnight & this morning which is helping them get a handle on it. I'll take hail over fire any day!

That rose belongs on the cover of
    "Victoria"!

  6. Your flowers are so pretty. I wish it would warm up out here so we can get our gardens and flowers going this year.

I am so sorry to hear about the fires and the heavy smoke. I will keep you in my prayers especially your dd as I know how badly smoke affects people with asthma. I have two little ones that have it bad so I know for sure.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend.

  13. Hon, you sure have a beautiful apartment! You are one of the most creative and resourceful women I have ever encountered. I've been looking back at the photos of your blog from long ago, and you're just amazing! Also, I've been going into Marshalls lately. You're so right about them!

  14. I long for a rose garden or at least a climbing rose bush over my arbor, but alas I have no green
thumb and im terrified of spiders so I dont do much in the yard.

  16. I'm happy to hear that the fire isn't closer to you. The tragedy of the CA fires this year are incredible. I grew up in Arcadia which was right by the Sierra Madre fire they had recently. Our family friends said it was frightening. Be safe.

    Your flowers look beautiful :)

  17. I love "Eden" too.I have one as well as a climber'New Dawn' that is similiar to Eden. I love the way you plant as if it is your own place and not just a rental. That is living isn't it to have all these beauties around you.

  20. Hi Cindy! Everytime you show these things I just think your landlord has to love you. To have someone care for an apartment as if it were her own home is wonderful. Your flowers are absolutely beautiful.
I hope the fire and smoke clear and you have a great holiday weekend.

Do you have any hints on how to take care of roses? When to plant them and so on?

  27. Hi Cindy,
AHH so sweet. I love the roses! So sorry about the fires, we have been dealing with them here in FL. too. The smell is horrible, the everglades were on fire here, it burned nearly 40,000 acres and we had a west wind which blew all the smoke our way, YUK. Take care.

  40. Thank you so much for mentioning your Eden rose. I've been trying to remember what my climber is and it's an Eden, too. I just love it. It was blooming just beautifully (see my blog) and then one day we had 100+ degree weather followed by 40 mph winds and there she went. All the rest of the buds dried. I'm going to have to give her some TLC and she'll be back, better than ever.

What beautiful blooms you have. My garden blooms are looking pretty too and I'm going to do a post about them soon too.

    Happy Memorial Day!
