Let's be honest...

Pin It Now!

Hi my name is Cindy and I'm a magazineoholic. Not just any magazines, certainly not the $2.99 trash magazines located at the grocery store lines. I crave the good stuff...decorating magazines mostly. I have my mother to thank for this addiction (along with addictions to dishes and old linens.) Off the top of my head, this month I have bought Country Home, Country Living, Romantic Homes, Home Companion, Coastal Living, Bon Appetit, Cottage Living and Cottages & Bungalows(the premier edition) and I subscribe to La Vie Claire. I 'm sure there may be some others that I'm forgetting. My addiction is so bad that now I'm venturing off to some new fixes. I found these at Borders yesterday, The English Home (actually from the UK and absolutely beautiful) and Cape Cod Life (I couldn't pass this one up because it says "including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket). I actually went to Borders to find Southern Lady Magazine and Cottage Style Magazine but they didn't have them so I couldn't go home empty handed. I really don't want help with this addiction because I can't imagine my life without these. They bring me so much joy. I'm a full-time single mom who also works full-time so these magazines are my entertainment, along with reading blogs of course. I feel some day they will take over my house because I can't stand the thought of throwing them away. I know I'm supposed to cut out the things I like and put them in a binder but I really enjoy going back and looking at the whole magazine months or even years later. I threw out some of my old Victoria Magazines years ago (oh how I miss that magazine) and I regret it. At least I still have the last few years worth. Do any of you want to admit that you have this same addiction? Come on admitting is the first part of recovery!

What every flea market shopper should have

This is so cute. Everyone at the flea market I go to has the same old metal wire baskets. This is the one that I want. I LOVE IT!

Our Christmas Tree

Pin It Now!

After seeing some beautiful flocked trees in the magazines this year I thought I would give it a try. I just wanted a light dusting of "snow" not completely white. I used 2 cans of flocking spray and it looked good until I brought it through the front door. The tree is so fat I could hardly get it through the doorway and when it finally passed through most of the flocking was on the floor. You can only tell that it is flocked when you are standing close to it. I think the professional flocking that you get done at the Christmas tree lots stays on a lot better than the do-it-yourself kind.

Dear Santa

Pin It Now!

Dear Santa,

I've been really, really good this year. Can you bring this down the chimney? Um, I don't have a chimney so you can just come through the front door. I really want this.

Remembering Martha's Vineyard

Pin It Now!

My daughter and I went to Martha's Vineyard last summer. For me it was a dream come true. I was there 19 years ago but only for an afternoon. I love New England...I loved New England before I had ever been there. I still remember the excitement after a red-eye flight from California when the plane started to descend and I could see Boston. I was so excited that I was finally there again...almost like being home but it's not my home...my home is in California. Now I have the memories and those memories flood my mind all the time. Most of my photos I took were of the beautiful homes and the flowers. I'm ready to go back...

A Mirror Project

Pin It Now!

I bought a large mirror at the Goodwill about a year ago. (Sorry about the bad photo quality...I really need a new camera) It was such a great deal, $49.99 and then marked down 40%. It was gold and I had always planned on painting it. Finally last weekend I decided to attempt it and hope that it wouldn't end up in the garbage. As I was taking it apart I saw some very faint printing on the back "Made in Italy." At that point I was ready to leave it as is. I love this mirror but I never realized it was from Europe...I thought maybe Japan or China. It has a whole different meaning to me know that I know it's from Italy. I was torn about what to do and I finally decided that I wanted an antiqued white mirror. Here is the before picture...the mirror is already out of the frame when I realized I forgot to take a picture so I leaned the frame up to the mirror.

I first primed it with a primer spray paint and then painted the whole thing with white spray paint. I then mixed some brown craft paint with a little water and used an artist brush to put the brown wash over a small section and then wiped that down which left the "antiquing" in the crevices. I'm fairly happy with how it turned out but I wish I wouldn't have used a flat white. I think it needs a little more sheen to it. I'm going to try to rub a little wax over it to see if that helps.

I still need to take a good "after" photo. I'll post that soon.
